Future innovations were discussed by the heads of the State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS) in a remote meeting with representatives of online advertising portals.
SFVS Director Mantas Staškevičius said that advertisements are a very important part of online animal trade, therefore, in order to prevent illegal activities and curb shadow trade of animals, it is necessary to control online trade of more strictly. During the meeting, he also thanked the representatives of the administrations of the advertising sites, who, in addition to the mandatory requirements, have been cooperating in good faith for some time in response to the invitation of SFVS and do not allow the advertising of the animal for sale. without any additional information.
The SFVS recalls that with the entry into force of the modifications to the Retail Rules, as of May 1, all animal breeders, animal caretakers or traffickers must indicate in the advertisements before selling the animals:
• veterinary approval or registration number assigned according to the procedure established by the Director of SFVS, • herd number and individual number of a farm animal marked according to the procedure established by the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania and registered in the Livestock Registry
• the chip number of the companion animal (dog, cat, ferret) marked and registered in the Pet Registry,
• date of birth (if known) or age of the animal,
• the country of origin (place of birth) of the animal.
It is cautioned that misleading buyers or not providing the necessary information about the animal offered for sale can also lead to administrative liabilities, including fines.
According to SFVS Director M. Staškevičius, the new procedure will help prevent the sale of illegally farmed animals and ensure that people wishing to buy dogs, cats and ferrets, as well as farm animals, receive more detailed information on the status of the farm. seller and the animal that is bought. “SFVS specialists will continue to monitor advertisements that appear on various platforms on the Internet and, if necessary, take other measures related to business control, initiate mystery shopping procedures, conduct on-site inspections, investigations, or contact the entity. of ad management about the incorrect cancellation of ads. We will be grateful to indifferent and active people, representatives of public animal care organizations, volunteers, who, if they have suspicions about a possible illegal trade in animals, will inform us so that we can react accordingly. immediate, ”says Mantas Staškevičius.
In addition, in order to combat the illegal trade in animals, stop illegal farming, amendments to the Animal Welfare and Protection Act adopted by the Seimas have prohibited the sale of pets in outdoor conditions and markets since May 1. , thus establishing not only dogs, cats and ferrets, but all other species of pets. According to the provisions of the Animal Welfare and Protection Act, a companion animal is an animal that is kept for aesthetic and communication purposes (for example: rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, fish, other aquatic animals, etc. ).
Veterinarians who first decide to buy an animal are advised to ask in advance about the breeders, traders, guardians, to assess the conditions of the animals kept in them, the health of the animals, and to inquire about the documents issued. All pet breeders, guardians and traders must be registered with the SFVS according to where the pets are kept.
A list of registered or approved breeders, guardians and traders is published on the SFVS website, so information on these entities can be found here. The SFVS also publishes information on the animals kept by the breeders and used for breeding, that is, the species, the breed (crosses) and the number of animals raised.
