During his meeting with Lithuanian President Gitan Nausėda in Vilnius, close attention should be paid to the situation in Belarus and relations with Russia, and the French President will later visit French soldiers serving in the NATO Battalion in Lithuania.

This is the first bilateral visit of the French president to Lithuania in almost two decades.

Before arriving in Vilnius, E. Macron declared that the President of Belarus, Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who was not recognized by the West, had to resign due to electoral fraud.

At the moment, it is not clear whether Macron will meet with Sviatlana Cichanouskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition living in Lithuania, who announced that she won the elections.

Lithuanian diplomats hope that the visit to French troops scheduled for Tuesday in Rukla will allow E. Macron to better assess the security situation in the region.

From July until the end of the year, about 300 French soldiers serve in Lithuania.

In recent years, the Lithuanian government has criticized Macron’s desire to forge closer ties with Russia and his criticism of NATO.

During the visit, a Franco-Lithuanian business forum will also be organized, and the agenda for the visit will focus on new financial technologies, fintech and cybersecurity issues.

After visiting Lithuania, E. Macron will pay a visit to Latvia.
