Former vice world champions, hosts and Russians from the Lithuanian handball team at the European Championship

Before the draw ceremony in Budapest, the Lithuanians were placed in the fourth weakest basket.

After the draw, it was clear that the Lithuanians would play in Group F with the teams of Norway, Russia and Slovakia.

Norway won silver medals at the 2019 World Championships and the Norwegians came third at last year’s European Championships. At this year’s World Cup in Egypt, the Norwegian team withdrew from the quarterfinals.

Lately, the Russian men’s team has not reached its highest point in international tournaments. In 2000, the Russians became Olympic champions in Sydney.

The Slovak team, which will participate in the competition as host, will compete in the European Championship after a decade-long hiatus.

In January 2022, 24 teams in six groups will participate in the championships in Hungary and Slovakia. The title will be defended by Spain. The next stage will be two teams from each group.

We remind you that in the selection competition, the students of coach Mindaugas Andriuška had two victories against Iceland and Israel. Following favorable circumstances, the Lithuanians moved up to the final stage last week as one of the best teams in third place in the selection groups.

The Lithuanian team made their debut at the 1998 European Championship, when they ranked ninth out of 12 entrants. It was the only show of the championship so far.

In 1997, the Lithuanians also played in the world championship, where there were ten of the 24 teams.
