During an editorial meeting on the tv3.lt portal, someone had a question like that, so I decided to do it myself.
Probably 80 percent. My closets are made up of clothes from second-hand clothing stores and their price ranges between 1 and 30 euros. When shopping at these stores, it is usually difficult to find exactly the item you need or want. Most purchases are casual or long.
Summer clothing list
I never counted how much used clothes I bought during the season and how many new clothes. However, before the beginning of summer, I made a list of necessary clothes and decided to buy them as cheaply as possible, spending up to 50 euros. I know I can’t find imaginary clothes, so the list was tentative:
Summer jeans;
White shirts;
Sweater or jacket
Slippers or sandals;
Summer outfit;
Wear.
When this list was compiled, I was overwhelmed by doubts. I decided to spend 50 euros for the whole summer wardrobe and I want to buy 6-7 clothes. It turns out that I can spend about 7 euros for an outfit. The amount is quite small.
So first I went through all the Facebook swap groups and giveaways. There I was looking for beautiful and quality clothes. I didn’t find anything in the store clusters. There, most people give away children’s clothing. But in the exchange group I found white jeans and a summer outfit. I asked the girls what they would like to exchange. One of the costumes that I no longer had had been changed, and the jeans were exchanged for a set of cosmetics, which I received for Christmas, but had not used them yet.
So you already have a garment and I didn’t spend a penny on it. Now I was able to relax a bit because I still had € 50 in my pocket.
Then I decided to look for sneakers or sandals. So I turned to Human, there at that time all goods were subject to 50%. discount. I didn’t find any slippers there, but I did see nice blue sandals, they cost 7 euros and a discount of 3.5 euros. Tried it, the size matches. I couldn’t believe my success. I already knew from experience that very rarely used clothing stores can buy unused sandals that are still my size. And if I find them, they cost several tens of euros.
I also looked at clothes in the same store, but couldn’t find anything suitable. But a week later I moved on to the next Human, then a single price of € 3 was applied to all goods. I saw a big pile of clothes in the store. However, I chose a buttoned blue sweater and a sports suit, pants and vest. Yes, it was on the list that I wanted a summer suit, but I decided to buy myself a sports suit. The three garments cost a total of 9 euros.
Long and unsuccessful clothing searches
After this purchase I felt even calmer, now I was almost certain that I would buy all the clothes on the list for 50 euros.
I decided to look for the dresses on the online clothing sales platform. Vinted. But the prices of all the dresses that I like started at 30 euros. I decided that I could spend more on an outfit. So I decided to buy a more expensive dress.
But I also looked for them in online used clothing stores. In one of them Text him I found a suit, this time no longer sporty, but consisting of a shirt and a skirt. In addition, at that time, the sale discount was valid and cost 5 euros, with shipping of 7.5 euros. I decided to buy it even though I already had a suit, but the suit could be in place of the dress. I decided not to look for her anymore.
So after 3 weeks, almost all the clothes on the list were checked. I just missed the white shirt. I thought I would buy them soon, but had no luck finding them. And if I found it, only poor quality.
So the last weekend of the experiment I went to Biržai, where I also visited several used clothing stores. And again Humanoje, but this time in another city, I found not only a white shirt, but also a colored denim overalls. All the products in the store at that time cost 1.5 euros each. So my two purchases closed at 3 euros.
So in total, in 4 weeks I bought 8 clothes: white jeans, a T-shirt, a sweater, 2 two-piece suits and a jumpsuit and sandals. I spent a total of € 23 on all my purchases. Almost half less than planned.
However, I did not buy the dress, instead I had 2 unplanned purchases, a suit and a jumpsuit. I found that shopping at used clothing stores helps save money, but at the same time tempts me to buy unnecessary clothes, as I did. After all, they cost so little that you want to buy too. Also, I noticed that you have to search for the desired clothes in such stores for more than a month. Most thrift store purchases can be called casual.
How to find pearls in used clothing stores?
Kristina Purytė, author of the first sustainable fashion blog in Lithuania, KRST View, stated that buying from second-hand stores is not only related to a lower price.
“Second-hand fashion is a more responsible, high-quality, unique and long-lasting choice. In my opinion, price is only a small part of choosing to buy second-hand fashion.
By choosing second-hand fashion, I choose not to support fast fashion and the world created by it, which is extremely fast, disrespectful to people and the world, ”said K. Purytė.
He also noted that the search for sustainable wardrobe clothing may not be limited to second-hand clothing stores.
“I really like moms, grandmother’s closets, online stores, Classic stores blusturgius, Classic and regular markets and markets. I especially like boutique and a market abroad. So I don’t have one of my favorite second-hand fashion spots, I stumble across all the attention-grabbing spots and see there are hangers with clothes on. You never know what is waiting there. Maybe that jacket that fits perfectly?
It is also impossible to plan second-hand fashion purchases. And the search is pretty much the equivalent of a lottery. The usual situation: If the idea occurs to me that, for example, I need a black jacket and I look for it blindly, 90 percent. most likely you will not find it. It seems that second-hand fashion catches, knowing they are looking for them, are especially hidden. So my advice to everyone is to know what is needed, but to decide that searches can take time, ”advised K. Puryt.
He realized that second-hand fashion requires patience and with it comes skill.
“Touching different fabrics, measuring clothes of different silhouettes: we know not only what suits us, but we also understand the properties of the garment: which fabrics are worth paying attention to, which silhouettes suit us.
The search for second-hand fashion requires interest and effort, and at the same time brings big catches, ”said K. Purytė.
One year for clothes – 610 euros
Tadas Povilauskas, an economist at SEB Bank, points out that Eurostat According to 2019 data, a Lithuanian (including children) spends on average about € 610 per year on clothes, or € 50 per month.
“Most Lithuanians spend on clothes in August and December, looking at the monthly bill for clothes. The August purchases are probably related to the beginning of the fall season and the preparation of the children for school, and the December to the gifts and the end-of-month sales from the merchants.
The weakest traders are the first three months of the year, when people tend to be most frugal after spending at the end of the year. “In the second half of spring and early summer, the cost of clothing increases, but does not reach the level of autumn, but this is probably due to the fact that clothing in the winter and autumn seasons is more expensive than in summer “said the economist.
