Following a very even distribution of votes among the commissioners, the winner was determined after various calculations.
The winner of the annual Car of the Year competition in Lithuania was solemnly announced during a live broadcast at Taujėnai Manor on Friday evening. For the first time in the history of the elections, the electric model won.
It is true that the winner was not revealed immediately after counting the scores awarded by the commission.
VŽ wrote that in the 24th Lithuanian Car of the Year award, 7 cars applied for the title, selected after nearly a month of testing and inspection by 10 members of the electoral commission. The following 7 models were awarded the Car of the Year title: Cupra Formentor, Peugeot 2008, Porsche Taycan, Renault Captur, Škoda Octavia, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen ID.3.
Each member of the commission was asked to award 25 points to these seven models on the last night of the election. In summing up the scores, it became clear that not one, but even two cars are aiming to become the Lithuanian Car of the Year 2021: Peugeot 2008 and VW ID.3.
Valdas Valiukevičius, president of the Lithuanian Journalists Automobile Club, which organizes the elections and a member of the electoral commission, noted that such a case has occurred only once. And in that case, one rule applies: victory is given to the model that the commission has given the most first places in its votes.
Still, the flicker of anticipation was waiting here too. After counting the top spots, it became clear that the two cars that claimed the honorary title also picked up in the same way.
Then they had to count the second places, and after these calculations it turned out that Peugeot was only one point behind. Thus, for the first time in the election history, the electric car Volkswagen ID.3 was announced as Lithuanian Car of the Year 2021.
Other nominations
On Friday night, another award was presented, often called the second most important in the elections: “Car of the nation.” It became the Volkswagen Tiguan.
During the live broadcast, other awards were given to the best models on the market this year. The Land Rover Defender has become the SUV of the year.

The “Urban SUV of the Year” was also chosen, a model in the segment that is filling up quickly. The award went to Peugeot 2008.
For the first time in the history of the elections, the “Electric Car of the Year” was also chosen. The winner, VW ID.3, was chosen from the largest number of electric cars ever presented in the elections – up to ten models.
Every year, the Lithuanian Journalists Automobile Club, which organizes the Lithuanian Automobile of the Year elections, also names the athletes who have made Lithuania’s name more famous.
On Friday night, the title “Steering Wheel of the Year” went to Benedict Vanagas, a racer preparing for the Dakar Rally.
The Lithuanian Automobile Sports Federation (LASF) contributed to the search for the sportiest car in this year’s elections. The Porsche Taycan model became the “sportiest” of the year.
The BTA Family Car became the city’s Ford Kuga SUV and the Porsche Taycan was the Smartest Car of the Year.
The association “Transeksta”, which brings together technical inspection companies, has discovered the “safest car of the year” by organizing braking tests. It became the most expensive model of choice for the Porsche Taycan, which also won the best design award.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class model was chosen as the “Business Class” car, which was also awarded the title “Renewed Car of the Year”.
This year, 30 different models, which debuted on the Lithuanian market during the year, participated in the elections for the Lithuanian Car of the Year.
