French President E. Macron paid an official visit to Lithuania on September 28.
In the presidency on Monday night, before dinner, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and French leader Emmanuel Macron exchanged gifts reminiscent of Vilnius-born French writer Romainas Gary.
The president presented the French president with the work of the well-known sculptor Romualdas Quintas “Child with a Kalloy”, according to which a larger sculpture was cast, which now adorns Vilnius and is reminiscent of the prominent French writer.
For his part, Macron presented two volumes of R. Gary’s works in the prestigious Pléiade series and a Pléiade album dedicated to this writer.
R. Gary was born in Vilnius in 1914, lived here for some time, then went to Warsaw and France, worked as a diplomat in the latter country, wrote novels, in one of them, “The Promise of Dawn”, he tells about his childhood in Vilnius, then Vilnius life.

On the occasion of the arrival of the first couple from France, after the official reception in the Lithuanian Presidency and the discussion of the main political issues, a solemn dinner was held in the Palace of the Rulers.
Presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and Valdas Adamkus, Vytautas Landsbergis, the Archbishop of Vilnius Metropolitan Gintaras Grušas, theater director Oskaras Koršunovas and other guests attended.

This is the first bilateral visit of the French president to Lithuania in almost two decades.
Emmanuel Macron will meet Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Cichanouskaya in Vilnius on Tuesday and ask her to mediate in resolving the political crisis in his country, the Elysee Palace said on Monday. Earlier on Monday, Chichanouskaya expressed hope that the French leader could involve Russian President Vladimir Putin in starting the dialogue.
On Sunday, the French president said that if the EU refuses to recognize Aliaksandr Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus, the leader of the former Soviet republic should stand down.
Macron’s visit to Rukla is also scheduled for Tuesday. From July until the end of the year, about 300 French soldiers serve in Lithuania. In recent years, the Lithuanian government has criticized Macron’s desire to forge closer ties with Russia and his criticism of NATO.
During the visit, a Franco-Lithuanian business forum will be organized, and the agenda of the visit will focus on new fintech financial technologies and cybersecurity issues. After visiting Lithuania, Macron will pay a visit to Latvia.
