Telecommunications and IT company Telia is testing the 5G connection in major cities. According to Dan Strömberg, CEO of Telia, this is a great moment. “We tested 5G in Lithuania in 2018. At that time nobody was doing anything in Europe, we were the first,” said D. Strömberg during the presentation. This time, he emphasized, the connection and data transmission were being tested, because there were not many users who had phones that supported such a connection. However, according to the manager, the situation has changed and now consumers will be able to test the connection of the future for themselves.

According to Andrius Šemeškevičius, Telia’s CTO, there are 7 base stations in the center of Vilnius, on Gediminas Avenue and Saltoniškių Street. There are two base stations in the old town of Kaunas and part of the Savanorių avenue, and two more in the old town of Klaipeda. A. Šemeškevičius says that the 5G connection will be tested not only by customers, but also by the company itself.

“Today, thousands of customers can have 5G phones and routers, and business can be another tool for innovation. Therefore, before buying frequencies, it is very important for us to test the operation of the equipment under various conditions, network configuration and telephone, data usage needs, ”says A. Šemeškevičius.

How to test

Initial tests show that the actual speed of mobile data downloads on the Telia 5G network is up to 1.9 Gb / s, the transmission speed is up to 200 Mb / s, and the latency is up to 10 milliseconds, according to a Press release.

To date, only Telia customers with an unlimited mobile data plan and Sony, OnePlus, Huawei or Xiaomi smartphones or routers that support 5G technology operate in designated 5G areas. Other smart device manufacturers should approve their 5G phones in Lithuania in the near future.

All Telia customers who have 5G-enabled devices in Lithuania but do not have an unlimited data plan can register on the Telia website at the end of November and try unlimited 5G data until the end of this year at no additional charge.

5G will also test business

Two 5G base stations will be built on the territory of Klaipėda FEZ located on more than 412 ha; such request was made by the company itself. There are currently more than 100 companies from 18 countries around the world.

“We are convinced that 5G is another strong tool to promote innovation and attract investment to Lithuania. Mobile robots, self-propelled vehicles and drones are probably the easiest to imagine, but with 5G, change and innovation are expected. in a wide range of other sectors, from manufacturing and logistics to trade. It is an important technology in the development of new smart services, solutions and processes. Klaipėda FEZ operates several companies from different industries, who are eager to be the first in Lithuania to test 5G technology, ”says Eimantas Kiudulas, Managing Director of Klaipėda FEZ Management Company.

Approved guidelines

5G connectivity in the mobile network allows to achieve enormous speed, discreet delay and guarantees a guaranteed capacity, so that devices connected to the network can make the most of their resources.

At the beginning of the summer, the government approved the guidelines for fifth generation (5G) mobile communication, which create the conditions for its implementation and development in Lithuania.

The provisions of the guidelines aim to establish that the implementation of the 5G connection in Lithuania should start in 2021. By the end of 2020, radio frequencies (channels) should be allocated and its auction announced, by 2022 it should be installed in at least one of the largest cities in Lithuania in terms of population, and by 2023 it should be installed in the five largest cities in Lithuania.

By 2025, the 5G connection must be installed in urban areas, in international land transport corridors (Via Baltica, Rail Baltica) and other trunk roads and state trunk railways, airports and seaports.
