Following the decision of the Eglė sanatorium to lay off hundreds of employees, the mayor of Druskininkai spoke: We are facing serious problems

According to the mayor, the situation is difficult for Druskininkai, as for many tourist centers.

“First of all, Druskininkai lives the same life as other Lithuanian resorts or resorts from other countries, when the whole life of the city depends on tourism, people coming and using the infrastructure. When services are banned, water parks, swimming pools, sanitary facilities are banned, only hotels are left, but their activities are also restricted, which means that we face serious problems when flows are flowing.

The decision of the sanatorium “Eglė” to dismiss a large number of people is regrettable, it is a private matter. They informed us but did not comment on it. Do I support that idea? Of course not. I would be inclined to look for different solutions, but the business decision is like that. The tourist facilities and water parks belonging to the Druskininkai municipality do not plan to fire people and will not fire them, ”says the mayor of Druskininkai.

When asked if the municipality could not approach and help companies, R. Malinauskas considered that where the municipality can help, it helps.

“First of all, the municipality has already done what it can do and help. During the first wave of the pandemic, property taxes and property taxes were lowered for businesses, so we are talking and cooperating here, ”says the Mayor of Druskininkai.

“The pandemic is not eternal, I think that after the pandemic the spas will bloom in completely different colors and solve the problems,” added R. Malinauskas also to the show.

We remind you that the company announced its intention to lay off 266 employees in Druskininkai and 90 in Birštonas. According to Sodra, the Druskininkai Eglė Sanatorium currently employs 616 people and Birštonas Springs, managed by the Eglė Sanitarium, has 177 employees.

“We are forced to take this very difficult step to save the remaining jobs. We expected the situation to improve, but it did not happen,” Artūras Salda, director of the Eglė sanatorium, said in the report.

According to him, the employee kept the Eglė sanatorium inactive for the past six months and expected the pandemic to end, but with the start of the second wave of coronavirus, the number of new reservations decreased by 90%. The company will mainly lay off service employees, whose workload is directly dependent on customer flows: cleaning, catering, customer registration staff, medical support staff.
