During the test run, two company employees, sitting in a vehicle on magnetic rails, accelerated to 172 km / h in 6.25 seconds.
“It was a real pleasure for me to see history before my eyes,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, president of Virgin Hyperloop.
Hyperloop is a high-speed train-like transportation system where the capsule achieves extremely high speed in a vacuum tunnel, shortening travel time and increasing energy efficiency by eliminating air resistance.
Even though the capsule almost reached the speed of sound, it traveled completely in silence, making the trip quick and convenient.
The test used the XP-2 capsule, a newly introduced vehicle manufactured by the Bjarke Ingels Group and Kilo Design to demonstrate that the latest hyperloop technology is safe for passengers.
“I can’t say how often I get asked, ‘Is Hyperloop safe?'” Said Jay Walder, Virgin Hyperloop CEO.
“In today’s passenger tests, we successfully answered this question, demonstrating that Virgin Hyperloop can safely transport people in a vacuum.”
The first race was attended by Josh Giegel, founder of Virgin Hyperloop, and Sara Luchian, director of passenger experience at Virgin Hyperloop. It is conceivable that accelerating to a speed of over 170 km / h in about 6 seconds would be inconvenient, but according to Geigel, the trip was “a little different from accelerating a sports car.”
