However, the cinema celebrates the opening of the two cinemas in difficult circumstances, during the COVID-19 pandemic, with cultural institutions facing serious challenges. However, Andrė Balžekienė, the director of the film, says that these are not fairy tales. The first story opened its doors in 2009, during the economic crisis, and the second opens to the world in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
“It just came to our knowledge then“
A. Balžekienė stated that due to the pandemic, the opening of the cinema was postponed from May. “Pasaka” opens in Paupis on the 11th birthday of the first “Pasaka”.
“We open the cinema without being very calm, happy or safe. Due to restrictions, we can fill 56 seats out of 112 seats and about 15 seats in the second multi-functional home theater room.
When we calculate and plan, we rely on completely different numbers, thinking of a different situation. It will be really more difficult now. But you should always give it a try, especially if you’ve already planned everything. It was not our place to stop because we had difficulties, ”said the film director.
According to A. Balžekienė, the idea of developing “Pasaka” had shone before, but such decisions need the right time, place and partners.
“When we learned that a new project, Paupis Quarter, was in development and a small conference and exhibition center was planned, we contacted Darnu Group, the developers of the Paupis district, and proposed to establish a cinema instead. , because we thought it would be more relevant to residents. In addition, cinemas are ideal for conferences. The conditioning, construction and installation of the cinema took a couple of years, “said the head of the cinema.

According to her, the cinema is a tenant, the building was built and equipped by Darnu Group. No state or municipal support was used for this.
What will be shown in “Paupis Pasaka“?
When asked what to expect in Pasaka, located in Paupis, A. Balžekienė says: “Good European films, quality American commercial and independent films, Lithuanian film offerings, educational programs for children, teenagers, screenings for schools, as in Old Town Pasaka. I call it all hope that we can do it smoothly in the near future. “
There will still be some such changes in the repertoire compared to the old “Pasaka” in the new cinema.
“We see and know from the developers’ data that there are many families living in Paupis, so we will try to offer more movies and activities for children. For 11 years we have noticed that the old town “Pasaka” is mainly a cinema for couples or friends. I find this to be influenced by both the nearby winery and the aura of the old town in general. However, there is a cinema on the second floor, it is not so easy to find a place for a car. Here, in a new district, in a new building, all this is not there. Therefore, we are eager to see mothers with strollers and people with mobility problems; access to cinema is excellent, ”said A. Balžekienė.

According to her, the free excursions are organized on the first weekend of the inauguration: “They start in the Old Town” Fairy tale “and lead to Paupis” Fairy tale “so that our faithful spectators can learn the way and see the new neighborhood . During these excursions, it will also be possible to learn the history of the birth of “Pasaka” and the history of other cinemas that were once in the old town of Vilnius. The tour is capped by a Lithuanian short film program created by the Lithuanian Shorts agency.
And we’ve compiled the opening repertoire of movies that are currently new to theaters and that were only screened once a summer on “Cinema Under the Stars,” but then, due to seasonality, not many viewers noticed. “.
Spectator Psychology Changed
A. Balžekinė was happy that the film market is recovering, that new films are coming out, but he made no secret that cinema has to face challenges.
Pasaka is a member of the Europa Cinemas network and we are grateful for the support to show a certain percentage of European films for 2019. We received it not in October, as usual, but in the first half of the year. I think it was a great support both for us and for other cinemas.
We receive part of the state support as film distributors. Now, the deadline for submitting requests for other money that has come up is coming to an end. During the quarantine and two months after that, we were able to get help paying our rent and our staff was downsized. So the cinema became practically the same as all the others, but we started operating later and we also suffered from greater limitations ”.

A. Balžekienė warns that the number of moviegoers in cinemas has decreased, which is related not only to the security requirements introduced or the current offer of films, but also to the change in audience psychology: “Perhaps leaving the culture aside. However, I want to tell the audience that habit is also very important. If you forget to go to the movies now, what are the chances that you will remember when everything is possible? “
According to the film director, it is obvious that the impact of the coronavirus on culture is enormous: What just did not happen, but the cinema still survived. I’m in a good mood and I think that even this pandemic shouldn’t hamper long-term survival: probably, of course, not for everyone, but for cinema in general, really, ”said A. Balžekienė.
