Unearthed the limit of the grave
Archaeologists began work on February 16 Street in the spring, and now they returned a couple of weeks ago and discovered an area of 120 square meters.
“We managed to open the limit of the cemetery, it is along the edge of the stairs,” K. Duderis points to the building with the inscription “Health supplies.” – Four graves in a row. One chapel was for a small child and the other was excavated when a rainwater track was installed ”.
Four tombs were found in an area of 12 square meters, of which about 8 square meters were undamaged.
The remains are found about 28 meters from the intersection with Vytauto Street, at a depth of 70-115 centimeters.
Archaeologists have also been able to find in this area the cultural stratum of the second half of the 17th century, but it is very small, with several finds: coins, including Jonas Casimieras’ shilling from 1666, some pottery. This shilling is the most common, with issues of 9 million.
After the intersection of 16 de Febrero and Vytauto streets, two graves with three burials were unearthed on the sidewalk, at a depth of 30 to 40 centimeters.
A total of six graves with seven burials were found on Friday night.
A riddled riddle
K. Duderis recalls that when the main reconstruction works on Pagyžiai (now Vytautas) and P. Višinskio streets began in 1934, 11 remains were discovered.
The remains and finds were later investigated by Balys Tarvydas, an archaeologist at the Šiauliai Aušra Museum, who published the data of his research in the publication Gimtasai kraštas. According to B. Tarvydas, Units are buried in this place.
K. Duderis is closely watching the reconstruction works on P. Višinskio street, but no finds can be seen there: the soil is almost everywhere, there was only a little black earth in a single area, but only 5 to 10 centimeters.
Remains were found on Vasario Street 16-osios earlier: in 2008, when new communications were established to the Šiauliai University library, the bucket of an excavator overturned human bones. At that time, the archaeologist from the Šiauliai Aušra Museum, who investigated the finds, discovered the remains of three people.
It has been assumed that P. Višinskio and Vasario 16 streets are connected by a large cemetery.
Now a surprise awaited the archaeologists on Vasario 16-osios street, at the entrance to the university library: at a depth of 1.40-2.15 meters, a 17th-century building “emerged”. Archaeologists have unearthed a clay donkey, a fragment of the inner wall foundations, part of a fallen kiln.
“There was a natural role and the building was there. Perhaps there were more buildings after the university, a thick cultural layer, considers K. Duderis. – There was a cemetery on P. Višinskio street, life in the middle and a cemetery on February 16 street again. The idea arises: maybe there could be two cemeteries? If we are talking about the United States there, perhaps the poor were here? Or maybe we are talking about a 17th century farmhouse, which has disappeared and maybe the 18th century was already a cemetery, maybe it was not buried in the hostel, and it was buried around it, maybe a cemetery? Now it is important to determine the period of the burials found. One coin is missing, and maybe then everything would come together. “
Until now, all the tombs found have been without finds, burials.
The graves are devastated
The February 16 street has been bought more than once: in the interwar period, in the Soviet era, pipelines, various communications, so that everything that archaeologists manage to discover is between the tracks.
“Whoever drove the caterpillars saw 100 percent and excavated a lot of bones,” says Duder.
Archaeologists saw a stone, like a monument, while digging a hole in the boy’s grave. After cleaning, it turned out that it was just a cracked stone left from the construction, buried with all the garbage in the skull.
The “finds” reminiscent of ancient foundations are in fact brick-covered power lines from the Soviet era.
“It was destroyed mainly during the Soviet era. Had it not been for the communication route, it would have been a very interesting double tomb, with two remains in a pit lying opposite each other. But all we have left are legs and bowls.” says K. Duderis.
The archaeologist points out that the burials in the study area are interesting, not standard: “twisted, twisted, somewhat confused.”
An exceptional find is a stone with a bowl that was on percussion.
“During the investigation, it is very rare to find how the blind hens got out of the stone,” says K. Duderis. – It was in the seventeenth century, probably forgotten and used for something, and then forgotten. As a bowl-shaped stone, it was probably once used for sacred purposes. “
The archaeologists plan to continue the investigation on February 16 Street for another two weeks.
