On Sunday, an exclusive organ donor was registered at the Santara clinics of the Vilnius University Hospital. Almost the vast majority of cases become organ donors after fixed brain death.
Donors with a stopped heartbeat are extremely rare, this is only the third case this year, and in the Santara clinics this is the first case overall. So far, heartbeat donors have been prepared only by doctors from the Kaunas Clinics of the Health Sciences Hospital of the University of Lithuania.
The kidneys of this donor were suitable for transplantation.
“By the end of the year, we already had 111 potential donors registered. We are very happy that, even in the difficult conditions of a pandemic, transplants are not stopping, even though they are threatened. Doctors are looking for ways to ensure that recipients receive suitable organs for donation, says Artūras Bagotyrius, director of the SAM National Transplant Office, which coordinates transplants.
The second transplant was performed at LSMUL Kaunas clinics. According to medical indicators, human corneas were suitable for donation. Family members who have agreed to donate organs and tissues to a loved one should always go to the medical institution and confirm the decision with a signature. Currently, by restricting the movement of people between the country’s municipalities, the relatives of the deceased have been granted special permission to enter Kaunas from another municipality.
In 2020, 77 kidney and 42 corneal transplants were performed. Transplants of these organs and tissues are most frequently performed in Lithuania.
Organ and tissue transplants are the result of two equivalent components – a high medical achievement and the most respectable noble decision of loved ones – that provide the opportunity to cure or improve the quality of life of seriously ill patients.
Any adult citizen can express their consent to organ donation. This can be done by signing an organ donation consent and, once signed, it is especially important to discuss it with family members, who have made a decisive decision in the event of death.
