The Japanese Hifumi Abe Y Uta Abe entered Olympic Games history as the first brother and sister to win gold medals in individual sports on the same day.

Not only did they do it in the same sport, but they were just minutes away.

Uta, 21, won the gold medal in the women’s weight category up to 52 kg when she beat France’s Amandine Buchard in the final.

Moments later, the 24-year-old Hifumi defeated the Georgian Vazha Margvelashvili in the weight class up to 66 kg and also won a gold medal.

“It has become the best day of my life,” Hifumi said. “I had no idea that we, as brother and sister, could shine more than now.”

Even before the Tokyo Olympics, Hifumi joked about the pressure to win gold because his younger sister could win a medal.

“As an older brother, he couldn’t lose,” Hifumi said.

Hifumi became the fourteenth and final member of the Japanese judo team when he won a ticket to the December Olympic qualifiers.
