The construction site led to the search for alternatives

The interlocutor recalls that the first idea for this part of the trip was motivated by the summer situation on the Vilnius – Kaunas highway. He jokes that if you’ve had to drive on this road at least once lately, you’ve probably experienced the “highway” turning into a “slow road”, maybe even a slalom track. According to him, the huge construction site lasts almost 100 kilometers, which led to the search for alternative paths to avoid road repairs and at the same time visit interesting places along the way.

“By leaving the highway in Rykantai and driving just a couple of kilometers, you will reach the only Vilsas stream in Lithuania with natural waterfalls. The waterfalls change every year: some disappear, new ones appear in other places. The great waterfall of the Vilsas stream is about 1.5 meters high, after which it can also be touched. The creek is spring fed so the water is very, very cold, but very clean. When you arrive, leave the car at the beginning of the forest, and up to the waterfall that runs through the forest (approximately 1 km. The signs of the path will accompany you) do not be lazy to walk a little more and reach the point where the Vilsas stream flows into the Neris. You can reach this place by a path that winds along the banks of the stream. “It was not possible to visit the old Jewish cemetery of Žasliai during the trip. First of all, the only way to get to this place was excavated by the builders who built communications in the city. Maybe especially (the cave is not safe and is hidden from the curious who are afraid of it), or maybe it just happened like that, but finding the cave is not that easy. Therefore, it is not known whether this place can be called interesting, but it is really interesting and rare in Lithuania.

That there is something interesting in the forest found by coordinates reveals a very busy track. It leads to a cave with a depth of almost 10 meters. Inside, there appear to be two rooms: interconnected lands. At the entrance, its height is one and a half meters. Geologists warn that the cave could collapse at any moment. So there should be no irresponsibility in this place. The walls of the cave are made of layers of natural cemented sandstone. When the groundwater level dropped, the loose parts of the sand washed under the sandstone and the earth split open. The cave entrances and now abound in loose sand, which washes up in a nearby stream. The cave, the sand and the sloping climbing grass that grows on the rocks create a really interesting image, ”he shares his impressions.

Musninkai is the little capital of Lithuanian culture in 2020
