Žirmūnai is probably the most densely populated district in the central part of Vilnius. Many people of honorable age live here, young families with children are formed, students rent apartments, a total of almost 50 thousand. population. There is a convenient bike path along the river, which connects remote areas of the capital with the city center. Not only the locals, but also many people from other districts of the capital flock to the water to cool off on a hot day. Seeing the great need of Vilnius residents to relax in the area near the city center, Grinda took the initiative and already in March the renovation of the infrastructure of Žirmūnai beach began.
“We have updated the infrastructure of Žirmūnai beach so that it does not separate, but unites people with different needs. We consult with disabled communities and universal design professionals. We have worked hard, so we hope we have managed to create an attractive and functional space where everyone has the same opportunities to enjoy the sun and fresh air, ”says Kęstutis Vaicekiūtis, Director of UAB Grinda.
For the comfort of people with reduced mobility, Grinda employees have installed pathways that make it much easier for the wheelchair to use the wheelchair, outdoor barbecue, and restroom areas in the dining area. Beach.
An exceptional innovation is the creation of a bathroom space, where disabled people will find a changing room adapted for them and special wheelchairs, which will allow them to go into the water and bathe with a ramp. Grinda’s trained rescuers will assist you in and out of the special wheelchair.
Evelina Kelmelienė, representative of the Lithuanian Association of Disabled People, emphasizes that people with mobility problems still face great challenges in the recreational field.
“We cannot imagine summer without water, picnics in nature with friends. People with mobility disabilities share the same aspirations, but this is often their dream, as the environment around bodies of water is rarely adapted. to those people. If friends and family help to reach the bodies of water, then the pleasures of water can be forgotten on a hot summer day, because the rare beach has the adequate infrastructure to access and bathe in the body of water. people with mobility disabilities, immobility means being between four borders, so access to health and recreational activities is very important to them. Movement occupies an important place in the lives of people with disabilities, since it helps solve many physical, psychological and social problems, “says E. Kelmelienė.
According to E. Kelmelienė, members of the Lithuanian Association of Disabled People hope that UAB Grinda’s goal of adapting the infrastructure of Žirmūnai beach to people with mobility disabilities will serve as an example, encouraging utility companies in other cities to return to its city residents, especially those with mobility disabilities and difficulties that limit a full life.
Tourists who come to the renovated Žirmūnai beach will be able to enjoy an orderly and newly planted territory, equipped with sports and picnic areas. A good summer atmosphere will accompany other beaches in the capital: Valakampiai, near the Balsys, Gilužė, Salotė, Tapeliai and Balžis lakes. There are also renovated volleyball, soccer, playgrounds, grills, and picnic areas.
The official bathing season on Vilnius’ public beaches will start on June 1 and last until September 15. The safety of tourists will be attended daily by 8 qualified rescuers from 8 am to 8 pm.
