The revival of Kaunas green spaces continues. After renovating most of the parks, the works are also moving to smaller squares. Kaunas residents notice construction machinery in the space between K. Petrauskas and M. Jankaus streets and the Radvilėnai highway. The popular spot with passersby and nearby students will soon become much more attractive.

Cozy space Žaliakalnis

The territory framed by K. Petrauskas, M. Jankaus streets, V. Kudirka alley and Radvilėnai highway has so far been undeservedly abandoned and in ruins. The walking and biking trails stretched out in random directions, with green areas cleared of pedestrians shortening the path. Robert Antinis’s small “Future” sculpture in the middle was overshadowed by chaotic adult vegetation. Advertising stands, bicycle stands are also scattered throughout the territory.

Redesign of 4930 m2 M. The needs and convenience of Kaunas residents and students of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences were taken into account. It was decided to slightly adjust the spaces formed, creating two overlapping areas: the small square and the large one.

“This year, big projects have gained momentum in Kaunas. Many of them are in Žaliakalnis: the S. Darius and S. Girnas stadiums are under construction, the legendary sports hall will be reborn nearby, the renovation of Sporto Street square and its entrances will begin, and they are preparing for the construction of a new athletics stadium.

Most of the parks in Kaunas have been renovated in a few years. There is also no shortage of actions in the Kaunas oak forest: the maintenance of old and protected trees continues. Now, another space from Žaliakalnis has taken its turn. We want it to be welcoming and attractive to both young and old Kaunas residents, ”said Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

Continuation of the oak forest

The parking lot at the end of V. Kudirkos street will remain in the large space of the square. In order to create a visually cleaner common recreational space, bike and scooter racks will be moved from the northern part of the plaza to a specially designed location next to the parking lot. The billboards will also move closer to the street.

By separating the transport space from the rest areas, the remaining green areas will be preserved to the maximum, only diseased vegetation will be removed and other trees will receive maintenance and pruning work. More than ten young oaks will be planted around the mature oaks. The newly formed oak grove will become not only a new accent to the square, but also a symbolic continuation of the Kaunas oak grove.

The municipality of Kaunas concluded a contract with the winning company NK statyba. The work must be completed in the next few years. It is expected to allocate 367 thousand LTL for the infrastructure and planning of the square. euros.

Highlight an authentic sculpture

During the year the electricity and storm sewer networks will be replaced throughout the territory, the asphalt concrete pavement of the car park will be renewed and the pedestrian and bicycle paths will wear out and deteriorate in some places. The path that runs parallel to the parking lot will extend to the small square. It is also planned to pave with granite blocks the already wise footprints of passersby.

In addition to the infrastructure works, the small architecture will be renovated: benches with a minimalist aesthetic, wastebaskets and other elements. The paths and the entire square will be illuminated to make the space safer during the dark hours of the day.

In collaboration with the author, R. Antinis’s sculpture “The Future” will be moved to a more visible place: the northern part of the square. An authentic work of art will receive due respect: passersby will have the opportunity to see it from both sides. The pavement lighting will appear in the bas-relief planes.
