“The results of the clinical trials show that this vaccine could be very effective against COVID-19,” said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
“Once this vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective, each Member State will receive it at the same time, on the basis of proportionality,” he said in a short statement.
Details of the contract will be announced after it is signed on Wednesday.
Brussels has already signed contracts to purchase hundreds of millions of possible future doses of vaccines from Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi-GSK, AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BionNTech and CureVac.
Van der Leyen has said that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) could approve the first potential vaccines against coronavirus, for which the results of clinical trials have already been presented, later this year or early next year.
“We … are developing a portfolio of COVID-19 vaccines that is among the most comprehensive in the world. This ensures that Europeans have access to the most promising vaccines in development, ”he said.
“Of course, all the vaccines in our portfolio will be carefully evaluated by the European Medicines Agency,” he said.
“They will only be licensed and marketed if they are safe and effective. In this case, transparency is essential and paramount,” he added.
