Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets will chair this informal virtual meeting from the studio in Tallinn, where she will be joined by Latvian Foreign Minister Edgaras Rinkevičius and Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Mantas Adomėnas said the Estonian Foreign Ministry.
“Estonia, as an elected member of the UN Security Council, draws attention to the importance of events in our region that have an impact on world security, so we believe that it is very important to keep the situation in Belarus in the Council agenda, “Liimets said.
“After our discussions in the Council in January on the situation of press freedom in Belarus, the situation in the country continued to waver. The media were closed and the number of political prisoners increased,” said the minister.
Vulnerable third-country nationals are also being used to encourage illegal migration to neighboring countries. “The human rights abuses and the hybrid operation against neighboring countries have obvious consequences for international peace and security,” he added.
The keynote speaker for the meeting will be Ilze Brands Kehris, Deputy Secretary General for Human Rights of Latvia.
The Council will be briefed on the situation for Belarus by Arciomas Šraibman, independent analyst from Minsk, Jens Modvig, head of the International Accountability Platform for Belarus, Viktorija Fiodorova by Anna Maria Dyner, policy analyst at the International Commission on Torture in Belarus and the Polish Institute of Foreign Relations.
Friday’s session is backed by 32 states, more than ever. These include various members of the Security Council and other UN member states.
