“Mr Biden’s comment on Putin is inappropriate for the head of state,” the Turkish leader told reporters at Friday’s prayer in Istanbul, praising Putin for his “intelligent” and “discreet response.”
In an interview with ABC News, Biden was asked if he would agree with Putin’s assassination.
“Yes,” Biden replied, and his statement immediately triggered the worst crisis in US-Russian relations in recent years.
Putin ridiculed the US president on Thursday, saying “whoever says anything else speaks for himself” and wished the 78-year-old head of state good health.
“I say this without irony, without joking,” said Putin, 68.
The aforementioned comments by RT Erdogan reflect the new tensions that have emerged in relations between Ankara and Washington, when Biden assumed command of the White House in place of his predecessor Donald Trump in January.
RT Erdogan is still waiting for a call from Biden, whose administration has drawn attention to the deteriorating human rights situation in Turkey.
Relations between Turkey and the United States have also been hampered by Ankara’s decision to acquire Moscow’s advanced air defense systems, the S-400, which Washington says threatens NATO defense.
The Turkish authorities also do not forget how Biden called RT Erdogan an “autocrat” in an interview in late 2019.
Despite disagreements over Syria, the Turkish president has called Putin a “friend and strategic partner.”
