Department environmental officers, along with Environmental Protection Agency staff and law enforcement, will perform carbon monoxide (CO) emission control measurements on gasoline cars and exhaust smoke measurements on diesel cars.

Environmentalists will not only stop cars, but also inform drivers about the negative effects of car emissions on human health.

“With this campaign we want to draw the public’s attention to the pollution of cars and that each of us have the opportunity to choose environmentally friendly vehicles for at least one day and thus contribute to reducing pollution. The aim of the campaign is to warn and remind drivers about air pollution caused by cars, which is especially evident in the hot season of the year in major Lithuanian cities, ”says Edgaras Skrebė, official of the Environmental Protection Inspectorate. from Vilnius.

Today during the campaign, officials from the Vilnius Environmental Protection Inspectorate inspected 37 cars (24 with diesel and 13 with gasoline engines) and identified three people whose cars exceeded the emission limit values. Violations will be the subject of administrative complaints of misconduct and are subject to fines of between € 60 and € 300.

“Although our objective is prevention, we will impose administrative responsibility on people when violations are identified. Individuals can pay a fine of up to 300 euros for the pollution of cars,” says the ecologist.

Additionally, traffic police officers have identified violations for which drivers face fines. During the inspection, one person was driving the car with tinted windows and the other driver’s vehicle did not have the necessary technical inspection and insurance documents.
