The amount of pollutants in car exhaust gases will be measured in the Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai regions, and drivers will be informed about eco-friendly alternative vehicles, announced the Department of Environmental Protection.

“One of the main pollutants of ambient air is transportation; its negative impact on air quality is permanent. More than 3,000 cities will join the Mobility Week initiative from September 16 to 22. Environmentalists not only they will encourage residents to bike, rollerblade or walk as much as possible, but also to choose sustainable vehicles that pollute the environment and, most importantly, the air, ”said department head Olga Vėbrienė.

During the campaign, cars will be stopped and carbon monoxide emissions will be monitored in gasoline vehicles, and exhaust gas opacity measurements will be carried out in diesel vehicles.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the highest concentrations of particulate matter, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in urban ambient air are found near busy streets. According to the 2018 national air pollution accounting data, the transport sector in Lithuania emits 71 percent. of the total nitrogen oxides emitted per year, 24 percent. carbon monoxide and almost 24% PM2.5 particulate matter. Most of these pollutants are emitted by road transport.
