Diana, a reader of the tv3.lt portal (the editorial board knows her real name and surname), complained that her mother, who works at the Lelija sewing workshop in Rokiškis, risks her life every day.

“One by one, the employees of the sewing house become infected with the coronavirus, take certificates of incapacity to work and receive treatment. But nobody cares about the rest of the workforce.

After all, they must be isolated and tested for coronaviruses. But nobody takes anything. Even the company does not care about the disinfection of premises and work equipment, ”the woman got angry.

Diana is concerned about her mother’s health because she is over 60, so the woman is already at risk.

“In the sewing room, employees are seen as robots, they have to work in any condition. My mother herself says that every day a wolf gets into her mouth. However, the staff did not complain silently, but no one did anything. They are afraid to complain again so that they will not be fired, ”said the woman.

According to Diana, she knows exactly what it means to have a coronavirus.

“It just came to our knowledge then. And the coronavirus really is not a common flu, as people think, I felt a lot of pain and I don’t want my mom to experience it. Also, she already has health problems, so the virus is really dangerous for her ”, assured the woman.

Ensures you follow the rules

The Lelija administration reported that the protection measures provided for in the resolutions of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, decisions and recommendations of the Minister of Health – Head of State Emergency Operations (masks, distances, prohibitions of navigation, ventilation, disinfection and tt).

“The National Center for Public Health is cooperating with the National Center for Public Health in detecting and isolating worker exposure to a person infected with Covid-19.

Currently, the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic is particularly unfavorable across the country, and Rokiškis is no exception. However, the company ensures the safety of employees in the workplace by applying the protection measures provided, ”said the company’s administration.

Employer must inform sick employees

Commenting on this situation, the State Labor Inspectorate stated that employees must first report the coronavirus disease to the responsible person: the line manager, a person authorized by the employer, etc.

“The decision on self-isolation and testing for people who have been in contact with COVID-19 is made by the National Public Health Center (NVSC). The employer can contact the NVSC in case of suspicion or information from other employees about employees who may have had contact with infected people.

In case the employee is subject to mandatory isolation (in case of illness or contact with the patient), it is prohibited to work at the workplace during the isolation period. The employer can organize testing in private laboratories, but only if the employees agree to carry out the tests, “said VDI in a comment.

Employees can also apply to the State Labor Inspectorate for safe and healthy working conditions.

Self-isolation is necessary

Justina Petravičienė, NVSC’s Public Information Specialist, stated that the pandemic is an extraordinary situation in which the public needs a better and more adequate assessment of the situation.

“It is unfortunate that not all companies are responsible, that not everyone understands that isolating a person is a fundamental way to prevent the spread of infection. In other words, if you get sick and we isolate other workers who have been exposed to high risk, it means that the parts will temporarily not work. If this is not done in time, we may have a huge outbreak when we have to suspend activities for a while, ”explained the specialist.

According to her, this particular situation is difficult to assess without knowing all the circumstances. Only some people may have been assessed as having high risk exposure and others as having low risk or no exposure, so they were not isolated.

“However, if a person does not identify colleagues who may have had a risk exposure, and if those people who may have had a risk exposure do not report it to the NVSC, there will be no way to isolate those people. This means that much in such situations depends on people’s conscience.

When it comes to testing, it is important to remember that even a test performed and a negative result does not mean that a person is not sick. The disease is known to have an incubation period of 14 days. And, as practice shows, it is not uncommon for a test performed 2-3 days after a dangerous exposure to an infected day to be negative. And after 5 or 6 days, the test is already positive. Therefore, isolation is a prerequisite to ensure that we do not infect those around us and contribute to the spread of infection ”, commented the specialist.
