Sakara is a huge necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than ten pyramids, ancient monasteries and animal cemeteries.
A group of scientists led by Z. Hawass discovered the find near the pyramid of Thesis, King Pharaoh, the first pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.
More than 50 wooden sarcophagi have been found in the burial shaft, dating from the New Kingdom (16th century BC – 11th century BC).
“This discovery will rewrite the history of Sakara and the history of the New Kingdom, which began 3,000 years ago,” Hawass told AFP on Sunday.
According to the scientist, his team discovered a total of 22 burial pits.
