At the sports hall, which has aroused nostalgia and feelings among Kaunas residents for more than a year, the builders have seen the finish line straight. More than two thirds of the planned reconstruction works have been carried out: the roof has been covered, concrete structures have been poured and the interior and exterior decoration has been renewed. Once the works are completed, the authentic elements of the room will be restored with the utmost precision and the range of activities will be significantly expanded.

“Kaunas is inseparable from the sports hall. Opened in 1939, the legendary victory space is precious to many and evokes special feelings. We could not allow this sports sanctuary to perish,” Kaunas Deputy Mayor Mantas Jurgutis said of the work that it has been in place for several years.

After reconstruction, the useful area of the building will increase by 1.5 thousand. square meter. Although the sports center is exclusively associated with basketball, the range of activities that will take place here will be significantly expanded after the reform.

“We are talking not only about sporting events, but also about exhibitions, concerts, congresses, children’s groups, dances and other activities,” Jurgutis emphasized.

Opening – in summer

Mindaugas Smaidžiūnas, the construction manager of the Versina company, which is rebuilding the sports hall, jokes that last summer, when the main works were installed, Kaunas residents often came to ask if something else was happening here. But now no one doubts that there is no shortage of action in the room.

“The roof was finished, rainwater drainage systems were installed, and 70 percent of the façade renovation work was done. Inside the room, the floor is concreted, on which prefabricated telescopic supports are already installed. Until the end of this year, the chairs will be in place, ”Smaidžiūnas was pleased with their progress today, naming the works.

Inside the hall: new partitions, tiered constructions. Currently, sanitary units are being installed, tiles are being glued and acoustic panels are being installed on the ceiling. The official opening of the renovated sports hall is scheduled for summer 2021.

Interwar accents are restored

At the end of 1938, the construction project for the hall was prepared by the most famous Lithuanian engineer of the interwar period, Anatolijus Rozenbliumas. Construction work, which soon began, was completed in the spring of next year. It is true that the building was not adapted for the cold season.

The hall, as most Kaunas residents recall, took shape after the reconstruction in 1962. An entrance was then installed on the south façade, an external drum was inserted, and the wooden rostrum was replaced by a reinforced concrete one. . The walls of the building were lined with fiber cement sheets from the inside, a plank platform was installed and glass wool was laid.

“The hall is being rebuilt according to historical material, according to which the construction period, not the Soviet era, but the interwar period, is fully restored,” emphasized Dalia Laurinaitienė, project manager of the administration works From the living room.

Focus on the authentic details

According to Laurinaitienė, after the Soviet era the building was insulated, cold bridges formed, condensate accumulated, and in many places the joints of masonry and plaster with metal were damaged by moisture. For this reason, during the preparation of the current maintenance project, it was decided to insulate the building from the outside with a minimal layer of cork panels.

“This will help prevent condensation and will not destroy the masonry. The exclusive panels were selected after analyzing the buildings with external and internal insulation and evaluating their technical properties. With the help of the cork lining and the last layer of plaster coated on it , the authentic texture of the facade will be reproduced, ”emphasized Laurinaitienė.

After the renovation, the room will be equipped with telescopic supports that can be pushed. There is also a place for a bar, cafe and exhibition space.

Six 50-square-meter universal rooms are projected on the second floor, as well as a multifunctional space with transformable partitions. It can be equipped with wardrobes, exhibitions, as well as part of stationary stands.
