E.Jankevičius on the father who runs the Santara clinics: if necessary, I will retire

The Santara clinics of the Vilnius University Hospital are run by Feliksas Jankevičius, the father of E. Jankevičius.

“If there are decisions related to large medical institutions, which are subordinate to the Ministry of Health, I will certainly withdraw from them. But the replacement is five days, I do not plan to make such decisions,” the minister told BNS on Monday.

He claimed that he saw “absolutely no” risk at this time.

Sergejus Muravjovas, head of the Lithuanian branch of the anti-corruption NGO Transparency International (TILS), says the minister could contact the Central Official Ethics Commission (COEC) to clarify how he should behave.

“The current law on the reconciliation of public and private interests transfers more responsibility to the politician himself, so the minister must decide how he should behave in this case, whether he declares his father’s workplace or not,” said Muravyov.

“If we have to make decisions related to the Santara clinics, then it should, otherwise there is no obligation, but it could, for the sake of transparency and anticipation of events.” I would understand if you applied to COEC and received an explanation, “he said.

“It just struck us then. (…) Such decisions would then help us to know more clearly what to demand, how other high-ranking officials should behave,” added the head of TILS.

In the declaration of private interests, E. Jankevičius has indicated only the workplace of the spouse: Aistė Jankevičienė manages the company Medicinos sprendimai and the public institution CSI Vilnius. It is also a shareholder in these companies.

The father’s workplace has not been declared by the Minister of Justice.

E.Jankevičius will replace Minister of Health A.Verygas this week.
