To date, Canelo suffered the only loss of his career in 2013, when Floyd Mayweather fell behind the judges. The Mexican has repeatedly demanded revenge, but the American is opting for demonstration fights.
This fight between S. Álvarez and C. Smith took place in 15 thousand. fans, that 20 percent. filled the Alamodome Stadium in San Antonio.
“I am the best in the world,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “In the first round, I saw what he brought to this fight, the skills he has, but then as you can see, I showed who I am.”
In later rounds, the intrigue of who would win this fight was already gone and, according to experts, the only intrigue that remained was whether or not Smith would be knocked out.
Smith had a 7-inch height advantage and an 8-inch advantage over Alvarez, but that no longer mattered when Alvarez eliminated that distance and consistently attacked both the head and the body.
“He was a better fighter tonight,” Smith said. “It just came to our notice then. He sets traps and lures in them. He’s a good fighter, but I’m a little disappointed in myself. His ‘jabai’ was really good and it surprised me a bit. His defense was really very good.”
Alvarez has now defeated both Smith brothers. In 2016 he knocked out Liam Smith in the junior middleweight class, and now he did it for Smith in the “super” middleweight class.
For Alvarez, this was the first fight since breaking up with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, and he returned to the ring after a 13-month hiatus.
Canelo also said after the fight that he was feeling great in the 168-pound (or 76.20 kg) weight class and that “he doesn’t want to fight on the scales anymore.” His main goal is to unite all the belts in the division and fight Billy Joe Saunders, who currently has a WBO belt, and Calebu Plant, who has an IBF belt.
The bigger question is whether Alvarez will agree to fight Gennady Golovkin for the third time, whose first fights ended quite controversially.
“I’m not running away from anything. I just showed that I’m fighting the best,” Alvarez said. “If he accepts that fight, I’ll agree, but I’ve already shown that I’m the best.”
