The Council of Representatives of the Patient Organizations of Lithuania received a call from the Radviliškis district. An elderly woman said anonymously that during the quarantine at Radviliškis Hospital she was unable to obtain the desired services. A woman with cardiovascular disease says she did not undergo the necessary tests for 2 months due to quarantine. In the end, my health was completely lost: I had to call an ambulance.

“Like a wall, I found myself at the Republican Hospital in Šiauliai. And there was a great hemorrhage from both kidneys, and the legs were streaked. Shake that Veryga as soon as possible, thunder him. If my prayers helped me, he would boil in a cauldron a long time ago, ”says a resident of the Radviliškis district.

Organizations uniting doctors say hospitals and polyclinics operating in the country have to deal with long lines, in which patients have to wait for the necessary procedures for weeks and sometimes even months.

“The queues have already lasted until September, until October, until November,” says Živilė Gudlevičienė, the leader of the medical movement.

“It is much more difficult for nurses and patients to reach institutions, it is difficult to organize work,” says hematologist Valdas Pečeliūnas.

Although the Ministry of Health explains that all medical institutions can provide services, organizations that unite patients mention the same problems.

“All specialists have to wait 2-3 months, and somewhere and more, for the improvement of services here,” said Vida Augustinienin, President of the Council of Patient Organizations.

Doctors are open: problems in polyclinics and hospitals are caused by the quarantine regime. Vilkaviškis District Hospital, like all other medical institutions in the country, pays a lot of attention and time not only to personal protection measures, but also to the coordination of doctors’ work schedules. After all, a large number of Lithuanian doctors work in several different medical institutions.

To prevent the possible spread of Covid-19 infection between different hospitals, Health Minister Aurelius Veryga issued a recommendation that hospitals work in cycles. Therefore, doctors work in some institutions for part of the week and in other institutions for part of the week. Vilkaviškis District Hospital explains that it is very difficult to implement this recommendation in practice. It is impossible to recruit all doctors in cycles.

“If everyone really had problems, because they would have to wait for a doctor for 2-3 weeks, then automatically the queue would go a long way.” If, for example, you did not see this doctor that week, you will again have to wait almost a month for the next cycle, “says Linas Blažaitis, director of the Vilkaviškis District Hospital.

For the doctors to work, the Vilkaviškis Hospital decided to pay an agreed fixed salary. It is said that doctors are not worth working otherwise.

“If you worked in 3 institutions half full time. You really have half an institution left, so you also have to feed your family something,” says L. Blažaitis.

Doctors explain that the recommendation to work in cycles is practically not implemented.

“After working for 2 weeks after 12 hours in a workplace, you still need to isolate yourself, do PCR tests and continue. On paper, it is possible, but in reality it is impossible, “says Ž. Gudlevičienė.

“The question of how many victims and I depend not only on possible deaths, but also on the deterioration of health, as a very very serious problem, we will experience during this period, as this confusion in the organization of work continues,” said the member. by Seimas Ingrida Šimonytė.

Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga is convinced that quarantine recommendations are necessary for healthcare institutions:

“Unfortunately, Lithuania is among the countries where the virus is spreading very intensively in medical institutions, and it is natural for both infection control specialists and epidemiologists to think of measures to prevent the spread of the virus.”

According to Veryga, the main problems are those institutions that do not want to adapt to the new rules:

“Some institutions, which I have already mentioned, have not even been able to put in place a plan, even for a whole month, to update services. It’s hard to say what the biggest challenge is there. “

The medical movement also proposes a very change in quarantine rules for nursing homes. Doctors suggest allowing relatives of patients lying there to visit nursing homes again. Being around nursing patients is said to help patients achieve better rehabilitation results.
