ATP leaderboard N. Djokovic suffered probably the worst defeat of his career. In New York, only a victory distinguishes him from a historic triumph, but in the final of the tournament, he unexpectedly had no chance of defeating the impressive Medvedev.
Moments before the end of the duel, the tournament favorite did not pass while sitting on a bench: he covered his face with a towel.
This year, the Serbian won the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. It took one step to dust off a record 52-year-old. The last of four Great Accent tournaments in a single season is winner Rhodes Lavera in 1969.
“If anyone deserves this title, it is you”, N. Djokovic addressed his rival with sensitivity after the duel and thanked the fans who supported him a lot. “Even if I did not win this duel, I am the happiest person in the world, you excite me to the depths of my soul.”
Winning with confidence, Medvedev rejoiced at his victory and praised the Serbian: “For me, you are the best player in the history of tennis.” The Russian won the first Great Accent tournament of his career. He also became the first Russian tennis player since Marathin Safin in the 2000s to win the Grand Accent tournament.

Too often N. Djokovic, who made a mistake in the final, also missed the opportunity to become a record holder for Big Accent tournament titles. Currently, 20 of these trophies are won by the Serbian, the Swiss Roger Federer and the Spanish Rafael Nadal.
