Director mounting a provocative installation at the Russian Embassy: Courage sometimes needs encouragement | Culture

“It just came to our knowledge then why it is a matter of intuition. I try to imagine the current situation in Russia with empathy and I understand that a lot of determination is needed for those who dare to go out on the streets. And courage is something like that, which sometimes needs to be encouraged, to say that we know, we listen and the world sees you, ”said Ž.Vingelis.

The commemoration of the events of January 13 reminded him of the situation in which Lithuanians should be: fighting for democracy and freedom. That is why he also calls solidarity to the installation tonight.

It is true that the facility itself will not be on the territory of the Russian Embassy so “Lithuania does not receive a note.” When asked if they had asked the authorities, he replied “No.”

And what the Russian embassy thinks is not our main concern.

“The show is called #PROTESTAS, and our institution has the category of professional theater, so it is not forbidden to mount an art installation in a private car across the street. It doesn’t matter what it has to do with it in a democratic world. And what the Russian embassy thinks is not our main concern. “

“Maybe at night, it will be a beautiful, lonely and aesthetic installation for people,” he added. According to him, the performance will also be shown online, so he doesn’t really offer people to join it.

How will the installation be?

The artwork is a mannequin sitting in an old Russian car, whose last name Ž.Vingelis did not want to reveal during the conversation. “We would like to show our performance to this person,” said the director. “Therefore, we will show a # PROTEST to that image of a man, a mannequin.”

Originally, the performance displayed in this facility was built with a different intention. “It encompassed distance, self-isolation, psychological issues. “When the events in Belarus began, we realized that #PROTESTAS is about resistance, the freedom to make mistakes and choose what you love, what country you want to live in and, ultimately, the person who runs the state,” said the interlocutor.

During the protests in Belarus, the Space Theater had also made an installation with this performance in Kaunas.

How to maintain quality and create relevant art?

“I myself and the entire Space Theater are not directly involved in political art. We even manifestą we have written – said Ž.Vingelis. – There is a line in it that says that art has the right not to get involved in politics because it is political in principle. The quest to create apolitical art is also a conscious decision. “

According to the director, it turned out that #PROTEST was related to today’s news.

“With political art that is not of high quality, there is a 2D effect. It is declarative and the performance shown in the installation examines various themes, starting with quarantine, love. The nearby embassy allows you to see the subtext, but not the gist of all the work. “
