During the entire period of the pandemic, more than 1,200 people died from COVID-19 in Lithuania. There were a large number of deaths in December. According to Daiva Razmuvienė, an epidemiologist at the National Center for Public Health (NVSC), 82 deaths were recorded during the Christmas period from December 24 to 27 alone.

Furthermore, the age of the deceased became younger in December.

“In general, there are a lot of deaths in December compared to other months. In December alone, 762 people died. That is 60 percent. of all deaths during the pandemic. As there are many deaths this month, that age is also getting younger ”, said the epidemiologist.

RE. In December alone, 15 people died between the ages of 50 and 60 and five between the ages of 40 and 50.

“Of course, young people also die because their immune system, the organism, reacts very violently to the inflammatory process caused by the disease. Cytokine storms do not help the immune system to cope with infection, but rather cause rapid death, ”explained D. Razmuvienė.

It is not worth waiting for an even better situation; according to the epidemiologist, the number of deaths will definitely continue.

“Currently, deaths are recorded in nursing and care facilities or hospitals where patients are treated. There is the greatest risk for the sick and, therefore, a high risk of death. But not all the young or old people who died had chronic diseases, “said the interlocutor.

After all, most people today are between the ages of 70 and 90. This is because, according to the epidemiologist, nursing hospitals now record the largest outbreaks. In addition, and mortality among people 70 to 90 years old and the highest.

“Once again, there are deaths when a person becomes infected with family members. Other deaths remain unknown, meaning the circumstances could not be determined. Another reason is that people are often reluctant to speak up, to reveal any circumstances when it comes to deaths, ”said D. Razmuvienė.

The epidemiologist notes that the number of young people infected by COVID-19 is also increasing.

The 2 deaths did not belong to the risk group and did not have chronic diseases

Last day 1,773 new cases of coronavirus infection were confirmed in specific people and 15 people died.

NVSC reports that 736 of the new fixed cases were recorded in Vilnius, 287 in Kaunas, 196 in Klaipėda, 128 in Panevėžys, and 127 in Šiauliai counties. A further 81 cases of infection were confirmed in Utena, 66 in Alytus, 58 in Marijampolė, 47 in Telšiai and 34 in Tauragė counties.

Of these 15 deaths, five were in the 50 to 59 age group. According to D. Razmuvienė, 2 of them did not have any chronic disease.

Four people died in Kaunas and Šiauliai, three in Vilnius and Panevėžys counties and one in Klaipėda county. Eight men and seven women died last day.
