Death from COVID-19 in a man not associated with the vaccine: had comorbid conditions

“Yesterday there was a death during the vaccination, immediately after the vaccination, actually during the vaccination. The 77-year-old man died and had concomitant cardiovascular disease. The death case is not related to the vaccine, which is very important, ”said Gytis Andrulionis, head of IWT, during the press conference.

According to him, the health institution that carried out the vaccination stated that the death was not related to the vaccine and vaccination, so the SFVS did not think otherwise.

The death occurred on Thursday morning, the VVMT received a report on Friday afternoon, around 2 pm

According to Rugilė Pilvinienė, Senior Advisor to IARC’s Department of Pharmacovigilance and Poisoning Information, the cause of death is described as “a sudden death called cardiac, it is a death due to an acute cardiac disorder.”

“The evaluations show that the case does not involve vaccination,” he said. And he added that the SFVS will continue to evaluate the information.

A representative of the VVMT stated that it was decided to denounce the case to avoid speculation and the treatment of incorrect information.

Evaluated as a match

“The person was vaccinated in an outpatient health center, where shortly after vaccination, he waited in the room where he was scheduled to wait for some time after vaccination, which is mandatory. <...> One person died suddenly of clinical death, resuscitation assistance was provided, ”Rugilė Pilvinienė said of the situation.

Evaluations show that the case is not related to vaccination.

The SFVS, he said, evaluated all the information provided and concluded that the vaccination did not actually result in the death of the patient.

“It was more of a random phenomenon that links were discovered with processes that could have occurred during vaccination,” he said during a press conference.

“There was no data or knowledge that the vaccine, the vaccination process, had caused death, neither in Lithuania nor in the European countries that we know of,” Gytis Andrulionis said.

According to experts, death is most likely due to a previous comorbidity.

“It would even be difficult to explain about such a sudden reaction, what could have happened so suddenly, just during the vaccination. It is very likely that this is due to the comorbidities suffered by the elderly person,” said Professor Aurelija Žvirblienė, immunologist at the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU GMC), on possible causes of death.

The person was vaccinated with AstraZeneca, the first vaccination.

802 reports of adverse reactions

The IWT reported this week that between the vaccination from the start of COVID-19 (from December 27) to February 19 802 suspected adverse reactions (IRRs) have been reported to the vaccine.to.

During this time, people were vaccinated with three vaccines currently available on the Lithuanian market. There were 585 notifications for Comirnaty, 34 notifications for COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna, and 172 notifications for COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca.
