Prelude to disaster
At the first Melnrage in the middle of the day, the vacationers saw a strange image: a half-naked boy of about ten years was running along the seashore, it was obvious that something was wrong with him, seeing that the boy had serious health problems .
However, everyone around him was in awe and cried at how such a child was released here alone.
And it didn’t occur to anyone that maybe he was confused, couldn’t find his loved ones, and needed help.
Only the one woman who was sent to this place by fate at that moment seemed to react. Vaida herself has been caring for her 56-year-old disabled brother for several years.
That day they decided to come to Melnrage by the pier, although they usually traveled where there were fewer people.
“I am tired of the eyes of people who see the disabled as lepers. We came with my brother to the north pier. We bathed, we rested on the sand, we went out with a search for amber because a lot of mud was thrown on the shore. And then I realized that something like this is happening, “Vaida said.
Then he saw a distracted boy in the sea behaving inappropriately. The boy took off his clothes and the woman realized that something was wrong with him.

“Everyone is standing up and complaining that he is drowning, that something needs to be done. And where it was submerged, near the pier, very deep, rocks, mud. He dipped it, erupted. that you have to do something, but nobody takes anything and keeps looking, men and what kind of attraction. It seems they would have kept looking. If a person is disabled, does he not need to be rescued? “Vaida was angry.
She decided to save herself
Realizing that there was simply no time to think or speak, Vaida herself fell into the sea, though she later admitted that she was not a very good swimmer, but that there was nothing to do.
“I approached him, hoping that he might try to persuade him to return to shore. I have experience communicating with those people not only because of my brother, I have worked with disabled people for several years on the Klaipedos sheet. I know I need them.” I spoke in that mud, I started to speak and grabbed his hand, even though he really didn’t want to go together, I gently brought him ashore, “Vaida recalled.
Then the rescuers arrived, the ex-surfers arrived. Now was the time to decide what to do next.
“I just let go of his hand, he ran into the sea again. I tell those men what you’re standing on, go get it and they say, ‘We’re scared.’ I even cursed and fell into the sea again. He continues, and just “It was a second before the tragedy, the sea would have caught him.
Fear of good work
After leaving the sea, Vaida no longer let go of the boy’s hand, he asked another woman to call the doctors and the police on the phone, as it was obvious that the boy was alone on the beach.
“The child, without speaking, immediately realized that he was autistic, I realized that he might have a hysterical attack or something else. He was very cold and very tired. I took him by the hand and was always afraid that he would not run away again. He approached such a woman, introduced himself as a social worker, said he knew how to do everything, I got angry and said: “Why don’t you do anything if you knew everything, you came alone now that everything was done?” We wait an hour and a half, until someone comes, ”the woman recalled.
Vaida is like that and, if necessary, he gets into a well or throws himself into the waves.
Finally an ambulance arrived and took the boy away. Vaida remained by the sea after the incident. After a while, she saw a policeman approaching her with a man.
“I was very scared, I thought, well, here I am working. Now it’s going to start, maybe I will caress that child too much, maybe someone will film and distort everything I don’t know. And that man, it turns out, was the father of my child. rescued. and his legs were shaking, he began to cry, he hugged me in gratitude for the life of his son. I reassured him as much as I could, most importantly, everything ended happily. I just arrived on time and in place “, Vaida summarized the narrative story that may have ended.
“We are proud of her”
Danutė Daukantienė, director of the Klaipėdos Lakštutė Center for the Disabled, heard that the employee of her institution is the heroine of this drama that ended happily, but was not at all surprised: “‘She has been with us for twelve years. Strong, determined, very responsible. We are very proud of her”.
Vaida herself was very disturbed by the indecision and indifference of other tourists towards a disabled child.

However, there are examples where people have not even escaped ice water to save the lives of others.
The incident was widely heard when, in late February last year, on a Sunday afternoon, the lives of two women with children were nearly taken by sea.
Then the mothers who wanted to take pictures on the ice sheet fell into the water. Those who saw the incident rushed to help in the disasters.
The people holding hands formed a living chain and pulled the mothers out of the water with the children.
Lost a boy from camp?
But how did it happen that this time a disabled child found himself alone on the beach and almost drowned?
It turns out that the parents raising three minors, including this child, had sent the child to the summer camp “Planet of Roses”, organized by the public institution “Behavioral Solutions”.
The campers took dozens of children with autism to the beach that day to learn to surf.
After the fun, get ready to head back to camp. Then supposedly a child and fell.
Surprisingly, the camp organizers missed the boy only after returning to camp.
Then the panic began. Someone told someone that his mother had taken his mother to the seashore, someone had spread the rumor that the child had been kidnapped by a woman who had introduced herself to his mother.
I finally had to admit that he just lost it and there was no kidnapping.
The boy’s parents, who survived the entire nightmare, said they had received no reaction from the camp leaders for the first four days: no apologies, no explanations, no regrets.
Only when the mother’s interviews appeared in public and the suspicions that the child might have been abducted did the entire camp delegation meet with the child’s parents, where, much later, they attempted to rectify the situation.
“I won’t even tell you how we feel and what we went through. Until now, there has been some uncertainty about what happened on that beach? How did our son get left alone? We have the right to know. But only yesterday (four days after the event – AD) we officially accept The fact that contact between them took place only after the fact was publicly disclosed is a fact, “confirmed the child’s mother.
The director explained on Facebook
Rita Karvelienė, director of the public institution “Elgesio sprendimai”, which organized the camp, did not speak much to the journalists of the newspaper. At first, he tried to explain the disappearance of a disabled boy on the beach with a misunderstanding.
Later, the woman no longer answered the phone, but only sent a message that everything was explained on her institution’s Facebook account.
“The Public Institution” Soluciones Conductuales “, in response to a message in the social space about a forgotten and abducted child, wants to publicly apologize and explain the situation. We responsibly confirm that the child was not given to any stranger. Only good experiences, emotions and social skills of the children achieved. On August 6, 2020 (Thursday) we had a day full of excitement by the sea. The children returned from the seashore to the camp with different crews. When we returned to the camp, we immediately missed the child and we immediately contacted the mother. “They did not understand us that the child was safe with the mother. We are sincerely grateful to the woman who saw and cared for the child until it was safely handed over to officials, “the agency said on Facebook.
The organizers of the camp should be more than grateful to V. Tamošauskienė, who helped the boy and averted the tragedy.
“This situation has forced us to review, evaluate work and safety methods. We are doing everything we can to make this painful lesson work to improve the quality of work with children. I want to thank the staff, volunteers, parents and the community for their understanding and support. We apologize for the pain and anxiety. ” – The director of the institution R. Karvelienė wrote on Facebook.
