COVID-19 Death Stats Don’t Match – Explain Where Another 800 Deaths Came From

The Institute of Hygiene announced Thursday that 3,320 people died from COVID-19 in the first half of this year. This figure does not match the one published by Statistics Lithuania. According to the Department of Statistics, 2,547 people died from COVID-19 in the first half of the year.

Institute of Hygiene: the analyzed data is presented

Rūta Ustinavičienė, head of the Death Registry at the Institute of Hygiene, explains that the published data differ because the Institute of Hygiene provides the number of deaths already analyzed. According to R. Ustinavičienė, the Institute of Hygiene follows the rules of coding the medical death certificate of the World Health Organization (WHO). Other countries trust them too.

From the medical death certificate, the main cause of death is statistically selected, that is, the disease that caused the chain of pathological conditions that directly caused death.

“Statistics Lithuania calculates COVID-19 deaths from the leading cause of death line on the medical death certificate before coding and selecting the leading cause of death according to WHO guidelines.

On the medical death certificate, COVID-19 is sometimes written not on the leading cause of death line, but on other lines (direct or intermediate cause of death) or other major pathological conditions that caused death, so Therefore, the numbers differ. , ”Tv3.lt explains R Ustinavičienė.

According to the specialist, the data from the Department of Statistics are more operational and those from the Institute of Hygiene are more accurate.

R. Ustinavičienė says that various methods can be used for the presentation of operational data in different countries. However, the final annual statistics, which are provided in the Eurostat, WHO, OECD databases, are processed according to the same principle as in the State Register of Deaths and their Causes of the Institute of Hygiene.

“The registry, like other European countries, collects official statistics on causes of death in accordance with the 2011 April 5 European Commission Regulation No. 328/2011, the coding rules of the medical death certificate specified in the methodological guidelines According to the WHO, the cause of death part of the medical death certificate complies with the standard recommended by the WHO. Therefore, the final annual statistics are comparable between other countries, “says R. Ustinavičienė.

Lithuania statistics: we publish operational statistics

Laima Grižaitė, head of the Lithuanian Statistics Dissemination and Communication Division, also ensures that the data published by the Lithuanian Institute of Hygiene and Statistics should not coincide, as different methodologies are used to calculate deaths.

“The Institute of Hygiene does its job, reviews the e-health records and questions some of them. What does Statistics Lithuania do? We publish operational statistics. This means that we do not have time to investigate and examine all cases in which a person died. As a result, three variants were chosen, three definitions of death, ”explains L. Grižaitė on tv3.lt.

The first definition is the narrowest. These are cases where doctors cite two death codes as the cause of death, indicating that the person died from COVID-19.

The second definition is when the two aforementioned death codes are supplemented with additional information related to COVID-19, but do not include external deaths such as drownings, homicides, accidents, etc.

The third definition is that when a person had a COVID-19 record, they could have recovered, but died within 28 days after the record appeared.

Definitions of deaths in the Department of Statistics COVID-19

“In a broad sense, according to the third definition, we count and provide them promptly, on a daily basis. The Institute of Hygiene needs to review, question some cases and have another number. We currently have four numbers. Three from the statistics, one from the Institute of Hygiene. There is a certain disadvantage that these figures are not harmonized with each other, perhaps the data could go back from the Institute of Hygiene to electronic health and be revised, then it would be revised in the statistics that we provide ”, says L. Grižaitė.

L. Grižaitė claims that the true reason why a person died could only be found after their death by conducting an autopsy and a COVID-19 study. All the dead should be examined, which would take time.

According to L. Grižaitė, the Institute of Hygiene reviews all death data, diagnostic cards and provides information according to another classification.
