Explained everything to the police

He spoke about his conversation with police officers on the radio news program “Question of the Day.” The man said he was involved in a step challenge with his colleagues.

“In summary, last week our company came up with a challenge: we must take as many steps as possible in a week. Since I don’t have enough time, sports clubs are closed as of November 6, I thought it would be fun to do sport and participate in competitions, ”swim coach Martynas said on news radio.

He said he walked about 30 kilometers a day around Šiauliai, spending about 8 hours a day on it. Seeing that it is behind the leading race.

“Therefore, I came up with the idea of going to my village, the Pasvalys district, which is 57 kilometers from Šiauliai. (…) I left Šiauliai at 6 in the morning, I had to be there at 8 in the afternoon, to spend the night, to do a good job for my grandmother, even to go to the store. I thought it would be interesting to do it. As I walked, I thought that it might be that someone could stop, “said Šiauliai residents.

The man said he would have visited a lonely grandmother in this way, as if violating quarantine conditions.

After about 35 kilometers, they passed the policemen, turned the car around and stopped.

“I thought we would talk in a friendly way. Very penalty fee The officers arrived, I told them the challenge of my steps. (…) He checked the backpack, sneakers, thermos, he believed. The bottom line is that I told them where I was going and what. They were not lazy to see that my grandmother had a second person registered at home with her grandmother.

And everything that was said was not taken into the discussion, they were completely disinterested that my grandmother had a disability. He said to get in the car to take me to the Šiauliai district. I think, well, a lot of machines are spinning around, okay. They took me there and told me that now I would have to write an explanation that I agree with the sanction, “he told the radio news program” Question of the day.

Martynas activities are currently suspended and she lives on 257 euros.

He said that he understood that the officials had acted in accordance with the letter of the law, as planned. But it has a question of humanity: a non-threatening athlete approached a lonely grandmother.

“I thought I could stop. But that he had such reason and purpose in sports that he accompanied me with a smile, ”said Martynas.

The news listeners also showed their position and defended the police officers. They urged them to realize how many people who want to break the quarantine agree on a daily basis. So a discrepancy in the story led to the imposition of a fine. Others have said that while the fine is correct, there is a lack of humanity.

The mayor of Šiauliai, Artūras Visockas, stated that the current instructions are not precise and should be changed.

Police: The decision could have been different, but the violation was

Ramūnas Sarapas, the head of the Šiauliai County Police Chief’s Police Station, wrote on Facebook that he does not support the decision of the police officers.

“It is a bad decision, I do not justify it and I do not defend it,” he wrote. Mr. Sarap added that the baton was bent and that the police officers had looked at the situation too formally.

“Citizens must follow and obey the order it establishes, and the police are responsible for monitoring and ensuring that that order is followed. Could it have been different in this situation? It could !!! But … it is a decision that is also legal ”, wrote R. Sarapas.

On the news radio, Sarap explained that the police officers had acted in accordance with the law. He asked if a person who had gone out for a walk outside the municipality should have done so.

“From the point of view of the police officers, there are legal acts that do not please everyone, but it is not about Lithuania, but about the whole world: how we can follow the rules to control the pandemic.

The question of legitimacy does not arise, the policemen complied with the law. (…) Yes, in the final version the person was sanctioned, the officials evaluated everything and made such a decision. In the human sense, there are probably opportunities to do the opposite, as it is not written in the law. But the officials follow the legislation they have, ”explained R. Sarapas.

Šiauliai County Police Chief Commissariat R. Sarapas raised another question on the news radio: what would happen if all Lithuanians did not follow the quarantine rules.

“Did that young man go and realize that the legislation in force today is like that, and in such a situation can he find himself, or if he, as a citizen, did not do the right thing in respect of the State? It puts two sides in the balance: the desire of the police to serve and contribute to the management of the situation, and on the other hand, our humanity, “he said.

Sarap also recalled that police officers do not benefit from fines: they travel to the state treasury.
