Poland recorded a record jump in new cases of COVID-19 coronavirus infection last weekend, the Health Ministry reported.

Most of the new cases of the disease are linked to a coal mine in the south of the country.

During the weekend, 1,151 new cases of COVID-19 were registered: 576 on Saturday and 575 on Sunday. This is by far the largest number of new cases of coronavirus infection detected in Poland in two days.

Nearly two-thirds of those approved by COVID-19 over the weekend are workers at the Zofiuvka mine and members of their families, the health ministry said.

In Poland, about 80% of the coal is mined. electricity.

The Zofiuvka mine near the Polish border with the Czech Republic in Jastrzęby Zdrój is operated by the state coal company Jastšembi (JSW), the largest producer of coking coal in the European Union.

JSW reported on Twitter on Twitter that many cases of COVID-19 were also detected at the Pniuvek mine. Like the Zofiuvka mine, it is located in the Silesian Voivodeship, which is currently the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Poland.

In Poland, with 38 million. population, 26,561 cases of COVID-19 have been reported so far, 1,157 people have died from the disease and 12,855 have recovered.

The country introduced quarantine relatively early, in early March, to curb the spread of the coronavirus. This is believed to be one of the reasons why there are fewer deaths in Poland compared to some Western European countries.

In late May, the Polish government began easing restrictions on the epidemic. Up to 150 people were allowed to meet and the requirement to wear face masks was lifted when physical distance rules were followed.

Since Saturday, several public spaces have been reopened, including cinemas, theaters, concert halls, sports clubs, and swimming pools.

The protests by the presidential candidates also took place in Poland last weekend. The cold elections are scheduled for June 28. They were due to take place on May 10, but were postponed at the last minute due to a political crisis caused by the pandemic.

In the neighboring Czech Republic, hundreds of COVID-19 cases concern the Darkovo mine in the northeast of the country, operated by OKD. Among the workers at this mine who have been diagnosed with a coronavirus infection are Polish workers.
