On Wednesday evening, the Lithuanian Medical Movement (LMS) announced the death of its board member from COVID-19. According to a Delfi portal, the disease claimed the life of a well-known surgeon at Mažeikiai Hospital who treated coronavirus-infected patients at the age of 57 (relatives of the deceased transmitted a request to colleagues not to reveal his name) . This was also confirmed by the Mažeikiai Hospital.

The death was reported by the LMS in a sensitive message indicating that after the second wave of the pandemic, the doctor admitted to having COVID-19. “Excuse me, I will not be in the discussion today because I am a bit struggling,” the doctor told his colleagues.

According to Sigitas Kaktys, director of Mažeikiai Hospital, Delfi confirmed that the doctor worked as a surgeon at Mažeikiai Hospital.

According to S. Kaktis, the colleague died on Wednesday night and became ill about a month ago, on November 20. Five days later, on November 25, the patient was transferred from his home to Šiauliai Hospital.

“He had a lung disease that he did not know about. The main problem of death was viral pneumonia, but that concurrent problem led to that solution. And anyway, the young man … At first he was treated at home, then the November 25, he was transferred to Šiauliai Hospital and he was treated there until yesterday. While he was relatively healthy, he underwent surgery, he treated, although he had complaints about the respiratory system, but they were not so clear, “said S. Kaktys.

The Delfi portal reminds us that this is not the first doctor killed by a coronavirus.

The first doctor to die of coronavirus died in late October. Jevgenija Mickienė, a GP at the Šilutė Health Darna Primary Care Center, died from the death of Šilutė News.

Justina Petravičienė, a public information specialist at the Internal Administration Division of the National Center for Public Health (NVSC), informed the Delfi portal that a total of 8,521 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed to doctors since the beginning of the pandemic. There are currently 4,491 sick health professionals.
