With the rapid growth of COVID-19 infections, representatives from the Kaunas Hospital of Kaunas Health Sciences University (LSMU) fear that there will soon be a shortage of physicians treating these patients, who are currently facing a burden. much greater work.

“Infectious Diseases Unit staff have already reached the threshold for serving COVID-19 patients. A total of approximately 100 physicians work with these patients; the team has been strengthened by connecting staff and the Disease Department. Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and there are visiting doctors. The team still needs to be strengthened, because it is not known how much the staff will be able to withstand, who have been working for eight months, “Saulius Tvirbutas, representative of the LSMU Kaunas Hospital, told reporters from the portal.

According to the interlocutor, the doctors work very hard, suffering unbearable fatigue. And what about dressing and undressing in special protective suits, which last 15-20 minutes at a time.

It is not known how much the staff, who have been tormenting for eight months, will be able to bear such a burden.

A representative from LSMU Kaunas Hospital added that prior to the pandemic, doctors were treating as many as 50 patients with various other infectious diseases. However, the number of people infected by COVID-19 has already reached 72 in the Infectious Diseases Unit, which is merged with the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Unit.

“This number is already large for us, although we have more than a hundred beds in the building, 30 of them are available. We could still increase the reservation, the structure would allow it, but if all the seats are filled, more staff will be needed. Therefore, we would like other medical institutions to begin providing assistance to patients with COVID-19 or otherwise contribute to the management of this pandemic, ”the interlocutor opened.

S. Tvirbutas said that LSMU Kaunas Hospital has many departments and medical staff working in them, but it is necessary to ensure the quality of other medical services provided, as other diseases also occur, not only the coronavirus.

The other units mentioned, according to the interlocutor, currently have all the necessary personnel, there is no surplus. “The team is being strengthened to the maximum to make things easier for infectologists and nurses, but access to staff from other departments is limited,” he repeated.

According to the representative of the LSMU Kaunas Hospital, it seems that there are many 100 specialists for the treatment of patients with COVID-19, but all work at the same time: there are hours of call, hours of rest, some are on leave or have certificates of incapacity to to work.

These days, there are four COVID-19 patients in resuscitation, about 40 patients are treated in the hospital, they need oxygen therapy, face masks, and about 30 more patients also have comorbidities.

Due to the current situation related to COVID-19, there was only the opportunity to see feverish children at LSMU Kaunas Hospital, as the Children’s Admission Department is still operating here. However, if hospital treatment is required, young patients are referred to other treatment facilities.
