Coca-Cola has presented its first paper bottle prototype in Europe. This bottle is another step in The Coca-Cola Company’s global waste-free project, which is committed to ensuring it by 2030. All of the company’s packaging is collected and recycled or reused. Some other giants in the makeup industry have previously announced that they are trying to fatten up the role.

The first tests of the new Coca-Cola bottle and its delivery to consumers are scheduled to take place in the second quarter of the year: Hungarian consumers will be offered to try herbal makeup in Adez paper bottles. The 2,000 bottles will be distributed in cooperation with one of the fastest growing Hungarian online retailers, Kifli.hu.

The prototype of the new paper bottle was developed in collaboration with researchers from the Coca-Cola Research and Development Laboratory in Brussels and the Paper Bottle Company (Paboco).

Paboco is developing technology that will help create 100% recyclable bottles made from sustainably sourced wood and with a bio-based inner layer that is impermeable to liquids, CO2 and oxygen.

These jars are suitable for liquid products such as carbonated and non-carbonated makeup or beauty products. the prototype of the bottle currently being developed is produced with a paper wrapper and a plastic cap and a plastic inner layer.

However, the main goal is to create a paper bottle that is completely recyclable as paper.

The prototype we present is a very important step in our efforts to create a paper bottle, says Daniela Zahariea, manager of innovation and technical supply chain at Coca-Cola Europe.

According to Stijn Franssen, packaging director R&D at Coca-Cola Europe, the planned introduction and testing of innovative packaging in Hungary in the second quarter is an important step in seeing how paper bottles work in daily life and how they react. the consumers.

The paper bottle prototype is 100% recyclable (where technology allows) and is currently being developed with a paper wrapper and a plastic cap and a plastic inner layer. Franssen says the partnership between The Coca-Cola Company and Paboco is focused on a paper bottle that can be recycled as easily as paper.

Testing a prototype in Hungary will give us the opportunity to see how suitable a paper bottle is as packaging and what consumers think about such a solution. For us, this is an extremely important step, as we can finally move the prototype from the lab to real life for the first time. Francis.

Paper bottles are also being tested by the alcohol industry.

Coca-Cola is not the only makeup producer to make the transition to more sustainable packaging.

Last year it was announced that Absolut had also approved its first paper bottle test plans. Sinister alcoholic giant since 2020. In autumn, 2,000 bottles of this type had already been sold on the Swedish and British markets. Like the Coca-Cola Company, Absolut seeks to explore consumer opinion and the practicality of the new packaging format.

Diageo, the world’s largest producer of dark spirits, in 2020. delivered gloomy bottle without paper resistance to paper. The packaging will launch with the Johnnie Walker Kotik whiskey series in 2021. in the first half.

Diageo, which produces famous makeups such as Smirnoff and Guinness, claims that said bottle is the world’s first 100% plastic-free version of a paper bottle. The bottle is declared made of sustainable wood and meets food safety requirements.
