The director of the financial leasing company claims that such a practice would prevent new similar service activities in the country.
On Thursday, the Lithuanian Court of Appeal issued a ruling by which non-pecuniary damage should be compensated not only in 2018. The intoxicating CityBee client who caused the accident that claimed a human life, but also UAB Prime Leasing, which provides this service.
Kristijonas Kaikaris, director of the latter company, announced that he would appeal the decision, which would negatively affect all rental service providers.

However, we do not agree that our company should also compensate the damage, so we will appeal the judgment of the Lithuanian Court of Appeal, K. We believe that such a court decision would negatively affect all car leasing and vehicle rental companies in the long term and impede the development of an innovative digital transport and mobility services sector in Lithuania. “
A precedent would affect business
The owner of the platform says he is convinced that such a court ruling would set a precedent when the responsibility of a person who behaves irresponsibly and violates the law is transferred to the service provider or the owner of the vehicle.
“This means that, whether they are car rental companies or scooter and bicycle rental companies, they become responsible for how the person using the vehicle actually drives the vehicle. The application of such a provision to a company it would affect other new generation companies that are part of the Lithuanian digital economy, ”explains K. Kaikaris.
The company declares that alcohol or other intoxicants have been and are incompatible with CityBee’s values.
“To further emphasize this, two years ago we dramatically increased the fines for driving while intoxicated. In fact, our rules are stricter than the laws of Lithuania because we apply the 0.0 per thousand rule to all customers. And if it is broken, the person loses the right to use CityBee services for life and has to pay a fine of 2,000 euros ”, the person responsible for the mobility platform imparts the charge.
