“Viktor Lukashenko has become the president of the Belarusian NOK. Strange decision, because both Viktor and Aliaksandr Lukashenko are subject to sanctions by the International Olympic Committee. I am sure this will be a signal for the IOC not only to extend, but also to toughen sanctions against Belarus, “said Vadim Kryvashayev, member of the opposition National Anti-Crisis Board (NAV), in charge of youth and sports policy.

He was quoted on the NAV channel on the Telegram platform on Friday.

According to V. Kryvosheev, it is precisely because of these elections that the IOC has not yet made a final decision on how to proceed with Belarus.

“This was an opportunity for the Belarusian NOK to rectify the situation. However, A. Lukashenko and the sports officials apparently live in a different reality,” said a representative of NAV.

“The national team will probably have to compete with a neutral flag at the Tokyo Olympics. And this is not the worst way for the IOC to respond to the inaction of the Belarusian NOC and the serious violations of the Olympic Charter,” Kryvashev said.

He promised that NAV would continue to work with the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Fund to ensure that “the Belarusian NOK, national sports federations and other sports organizations respect the rights of all athletes, regardless of their achievements, as well as the rights of sports professionals. sport”.

Viktor Lukashenko, who has so far served as the first vice president of the National Olympic Committee, was elected president of the NOK at an Olympic meeting on Friday.

At the beginning of December last year, the IOC decided to withdraw the members of the Executive Committee of the Belarusian NOK led by Lukashenko from the Olympic Games and other events of the organization.

It was also decided to freeze payments to the Belarusian NOK, except for funds related to the preparation of Belarusian athletes for the Tokyo Olympics and the Beijing Winter Olympics. Furthermore, talks with the Belarusian NOK on the organization of future IOC events were suspended.

Earlier, the IOC launched an investigation into Belarus for alleged political persecution of athletes.
