Christopher Columbus monument demolished in the USA

“The significance of some monuments and statues, which mean different things to most people, is being reevaluated in the country and around the world,” Lester Davis, spokesman for Democratic Mayor Bernard Young, told the media in Baltimore.

Columbus was one of the first Europeans in the “New World”, and is generally regarded as the discoverer of the United States. But historians and human rights activists criticize Columbus’ role, accusing him of contributing to the slavery of the Native American population.

Speaking in Washington, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, promised to defend the American way of life that began when Columbus discovered America.

“We will never allow an angry crowd to destroy our monuments, erase our history, indoctrinate our children, or mention our freedoms,” Trump said.

Recently, protesters in the United States have demolished monuments to Columbus and other historical figures as calls for people to stop worshiping “with a racist past.”

Protests and riots erupted in the United States in late May, when a black man, George Floyd, was arrested in Minneapolis.
