On Monday, LRT radio reported on the “Ryto garsai” program that the State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS) had received a message that in a Vilnius progymnasium for students, meals are prepared with food waste, which is collected from dishes.

Chefs have yet to see such horror

This fact was recognized by one of the chefs at the Vilnius Duke Gediminas Progymnasium. The woman said she felt unpleasant and embarrassed talking about cooking at school.

“What I saw now, I told my children that you really would not eat in the canteen. I’d better prepare your food myself. I haven’t seen such horror yet, “said one of the progymnasium chefs.

Rimantas Remeika, the person in charge of the progymnasium, admits that children do not eat in the dining room, but, in his opinion, the reason is that children are not used to eating healthy.

“They work according to the technology cards we use to make the purchase. The technology files have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Minister of Health.

For quality, I could not say. I eat as much as I can and others eat. For example, children did not eat beef chops much because they did not know them. The veal chop is black, the color is not appropriate. It is not white, which means it is not as light as pork or chicken. Last year there was no such thing, and now according to the technology sheets there are beef chops ”, said the director of the progymnasium.

Meanwhile, the chef reveals that there was no meat smell.

“There was a lot of stew left and the next day there were veal dumplings. We ate this meat and then made dumplings, ”said the chef.

Parents worry about hungry children

At that time, the parents of the students also claimed that the children did not want to eat at school.

“The mood of the parents is such that some children do not eat anything at school. The word of the children themselves is” simply inedible. “

Probably the main thing for parents is not whether they pay the money themselves or whether the state does it, but the fact that the child is hungry all day. The hungry child cannot study productively and then parents give extra food and school food is probably thrown away, ”said the mother of the Duke Gediminas Progymnasium student after the parents’ meeting.

A complaint to the State Food and Veterinary Service claims that children’s dinner porridges are baked from the morning porridge, so the food is certainly not thrown away.

“When the children don’t eat porridge in the morning, they prepare to spread it at night. And that porridge is not from the pot where it was left, but from the children’s dishes. He puts it in a bucket where the food has to be thrown away, but he does not throw it away, but spreads it in the afternoons ”, confirmed the chef information on the complaint.

The report also indicates that if the pancakes made from morning porridge stay overnight, they are ground into dumplings the next day.

“For a couple of days, there were times when they tried to make smaller portions and improvise. The feeder did not calculate how much food she would need, so she was lacking, ”said Rimantas Remeika, director of the progymnasium, who also expressed dissatisfaction.

The progymnasium under his leadership in Vilnius has three branches. Each of them, after the canteen.

“One day 238 children ate and brought 9 kilograms of meat. And so more less every day, ”said a chef from another branch of the same school.

Parents say that fish dishes are not eaten at school.

“We talked to our parents that all fish products are absolutely inedible. They are not even eaten by teachers. Not only is fish not served normally, but it is ground into roasts or cutlets that smell like fish, but the question it is if there really is fish there ”, said the mother.

Food not eaten fix

The chef says that the food is collected from other children’s waste in case of food shortages.

“There were fish cutlets and the portion had to be 80 grams, but we made 60 grams and that was not enough. These women gathered where the children did not eat and still gave to other children. If perforated fixed up, heated up and gave way. It is possible to feed 3-4 classes with that waste ”, revealed the chef.

The chef said the 1st and 2nd grade students are visiting the dining room first. Your uneaten food cooks fix and then serve seniors.

“I’ve seen it and I’ve done it myself. The boss said they had to go pick it up, and then they put them back in the pot,” said the chef.

The SFVS has identified a number of violations

In response to the complaint, the Food and Veterinary Office conducted an inspection of school cafeterias.

Suspicions of violations of mandatory hygiene requirements for facilities and equipment and the use of unused food raw materials, rather than end-of-use utilization, have been confirmed, according to the press release.

An inspection by SFVS inspectors of the branch school canteens found that meals for children were not prepared according to recipes (for example, some menu items were found to weigh less than declared or some dishes were replaced ).

Additionally, the inspection revealed that the animal by-product (i.e. food waste) freezer also contained non-animal by-products such as cut bananas packed in poly bags, frozen buns, and frozen curd dumplings.

Other irregularities were also found: raw meat and berries stored in the freezer as food raw material were not properly separated and 5 kg of beef shoulder was found with an expired shelf life.

One of the most serious violations detected by SFVS inspectors in a public catering company located in Lukiškių skg. 5 at the Vilnius Duke Gediminas operational Progymnasium – the fact that during the re-inspection carried out tomorrow, the specified raw material (beef) with expired shelf life was found again in the refrigerator together with products suitable for cooking.

Catering services for Vilnius Prince Gediminas Progymnasium are provided by the Bruneros public institution. The institution has not yet ruled on the situation.
