“It just came to our attention then. Yes, this time we were a little slower, we made mistakes, although our competitors did. It is true that we were overtaking them at the same time, but one of our maneuvers did not work, so we lost them 7 minutes “, 15 minutes said Ambersail 2 team captain Rokas Milevičius.
According to him, the competition with identical Volvo65 boats was very interesting: the Lithuanians had to perform many different maneuvers, change sails more than once, and the crew allegedly worked from the shoulder in the race that lasted almost a day and a half. “Everything was successful, we didn’t break anything, we didn’t break anything, everyone is healthy and that’s the most important thing. We had a great time and had the opportunity to play with a world-class star, my former captain Bowie Becking,” Milevičius said.

Ambersail 2 and Sailing Poland sailed for the second time, both crews sailed to Klaipeda last week in Poland and now decided to try the reverse route: they started the race at the port of Klaipeda towards Gotland and then finished in Gdynia. And although the first time was a success for the Lithuanians, this time the friendship won: the Poles withdrew.
“Compared to last week, this navigation was much more complicated, the distance was longer, it required more effort from the crew, there were many sail changes, we did not use just two of them, the wind conditions also changed.” We started with a very light wind, then it went up to 25 knots, the night was very windy. We had in the middle of the night take the mark and to circumnavigate around the island, there are also additional dangers here, as you have to watch out for obstacles and maneuver correctly. We also had a strong wind. The crew slept little and worked very hard, ”said the team captain.

On the other hand, he was satisfied with the correct decision of the crew regarding the chosen distance. Initially, it was considered to sail a third more distance on the island of Gotland; in that case, Gdynia would have had to finish late at night, sail very slowly and with less wind, and the most difficult maneuvers would not have been possible.
However, despite the changing weather conditions, competing with B.Bekking, an experienced sailor leading this time for the Polish crew, became almost the biggest challenge for the Lithuanians. Just a week before departure, the Dutch star began training the team intensively.

“I think the team got much stronger that week, they worked together. The Polish crew was young, they trained all summer, but they urgently needed a teacher who could guide them in the right direction. Bowie Becking was that person: he knows the subtleties well. of navigation, he knows the ships, he knows how to train crews, present information so that the crew can absorb it quickly. The fact that the Poles were late to Klaipeda also shows that the crew was preparing for this duel until the last minute. ” R. Milevičius said.
According to him, Lithuanians can also learn from B. Becking, so the captain hopes that the day will come when the captain of the Volvo Ocean Race, who has gone around the world with a Brunel yacht, comes aboard the ship. Ambersail 2.
Bowie himself has repeatedly said how good it is for him to return to the port of Klaipeda, therefore I believe that anything is possible. I hope there will be more races of this type: we have made contacts, we have seen that Gdynia and Klaipeda are close cities and if the winds are favorable it takes about 6-7 hours to get there. Even a car wouldn’t arrive for that long. I want to believe that this friendship will continue, “said R. Milevičius.

The captain of Ambersail 2 was also pleased with the idea of the race itself, a case in which 2 out of 8 boats in the world meet to compete against each other in a truly exceptional way. And especially in the context of a pandemic, when many races are canceled, when the possibilities of sailing in regattas are significantly reduced.
“It is unfortunate that the end of the season and a lot of uncertainty about the coronavirus. The fact that many contests have been canceled has also given rise to this idea. So now, as the weather permits, I think we’ll meet a couple more times and train or even compete. Although, of course, everything is based on resources: sailing on this boat costs a lot, so desire alone is not enough either, ”said R. Milevičius.

After the completion of the race in Gdynia, the Ambersail 2 team spent a couple of hours resting, having dinner and soon turned around and headed to their hometown of Klaipeda. Saturday at 8 pm The crew, who have docked in Poland, should return to Lithuania on Sunday afternoon, but everything will be determined by the weather conditions. “The prognosis is very unfavorable. The maneuver is waiting, and although the wind will not be strong, swimming will be uncomfortable: long, slow and wet, ”said the captain.
The crew of Ambersail 2 has 17 members. Among them, Captain R. Milevičius, Helmsman Saulius Pajarskas, Linas Ivanauskas-Linkus, Tomas Ivanauskas, Domantas Juškevičius, Raimundas Daubaras, Martynas Jotautis, Regimantas Buožius, Irmantas Norkus, Vidas Gedutis, Kęstutius Kalimasvičius and Kęstutius AndukŠukŠusckeranius Pranksius Kalihaskiusranius, Kyūrimaskisius Kalihaskiusranius, Kęstutius Andreskimasius Marihaskiusi Y 15 minutes journalist Monika Svėrytė.
