The Government expanded contact training for primary school children in a pilot project in Vilnius Prince Gediminas Progymnasium on Wednesday until the end of March. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers has allowed the capital city to choose more institutions where the coronavirus is periodically tested by the community and students, who study in person in the classroom.
Contact education at the progymnasium resumed more than a week ago, during which time no COVID-19 infections were detected.
Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys stressed that “the first results show that the project is a success.”
“The Vilnius city municipality sees the meaning and possibility of expanding this project, therefore we would like to offer to allow the Vilnius city municipality to choose as many educational institutions as it can, in an organizational sense, to expand this project, “said A. Dulkys.
The Cabinet of Ministers also agreed that the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports will organize a meeting with the mayors, thus creating the conditions for schools from other municipalities to join the project.
“The fact is that the municipality can expand the sample now. And with regard to development in other municipalities, the Minister of Education has already mentioned that we will connect all enthusiasts and try to advance along that path throughout Lithuania, ”said Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
Vilnius Mayor Advisor Karolis Vaitkevičius informed BNS that the return of more primary schools to 3 or 4 more schools is being considered, which could happen from mid-March. When choosing institutions, their size and capabilities will be evaluated to ensure flow management and testing possibilities.
On the eve of the decision, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said there was still time to technically prepare for the opening of all the other schools. The government’s quarantine mitigation plan first provides for the return of all primary and secondary school dropouts to schools.
The plan states that all elementary school students will be able to return to school when the new 100,000. There will be fewer than 200 coronavirus cases per population in two weeks, and the proportion of positive tests will not reach 10 percent.
