British Health Minister: new strain of coronavirus is out of control

According to the first data, the virus mutation is much more contagious than the hitherto known form of the virus. However, there is no evidence that it leads to a more severe course of the disease or higher mortality. Additionally, the agencies believe the vaccine will be effective against the mutated virus.

Hancock said he was very concerned about the country’s healthcare system. Currently, more than 18,000 people receive treatment in hospitals. This is almost the same as during the peak of the first spring wave. “This is another reason for everyone to follow the new rules and take personal responsibility,” said the minister. He told Sky News that everyone should act like they are infected with a coronavirus. “It is the only way to control the virus,” Hancock said.

Due to the rapid spread of the new strain of the virus in London and other areas in south-east England, a new quarantine has been established since Sunday with strict movement restrictions that will also apply at Christmas. It cannot be ruled out that the stricter measures will be in place for several more months before a sufficient number of people are vaccinated, the minister said.
