Eurostar trains between London, Brussels and Amsterdam will stop from Monday, and Italy will join several other European countries that have banned passenger flights from the UK.

High-speed trains are stopped after the Belgian government announced that its borders with the United Kingdom will be closed at midnight on Sunday. However, Eurostar announced on Sunday that trains would continue to run between London and Paris.

The Belgian government has previously announced that it will review the order to ban flights and train travel from the UK within 24 hours. Eurostar said it was waiting for more details from governments on the application of travel restrictions.

The cancellation of flights from Great Britain, where a new, more contagious strain of coronavirus is spreading, was also announced Sunday by the head of Italian diplomacy, Luigi Di Maio. In this way, the Italians joined other European countries: Holland, Belgium and Austria.

“The UK has issued a warning about a new variant of COVID-19,” the head of Italy’s Foreign Ministry wrote on Facebook. “It is our duty as a government to protect Italians, and for that reason … we will sign an order with the Health Minister banning flights to and from Britain.”

However, Mr. Di Maio did not indicate when the measure would take effect.

Berlin is also seriously considering a similar ban on flights from Britain and South Africa, a German government source said.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said Sunday that the government had announced a strict quarantine in south-east England because a new, more contagious strain of coronavirus was “out of control”.

“We acted very quickly and decisively,” Hancock told Sky News. – Unfortunately, the new variety was out of control. We have to control it. “
