Brave and terrifying ideas of Professor Lekevičius: we have 200 years left

The philosopher Professor Krescencia Stoškas was very impressed by Edmundas Lekevičius’s reflections on the crisis of civilization and his perspectives in the book published by Alma littera. “I find it particularly wonderful to link human evolution to other biological processes. I did not imagine that someone in Lithuania could write such a work, ”said the professor about the newly published book.

Journalist Laisvė Radzevičienė talks to Professor Edmundas Lekevičius, author of the book The Man in the Gap: Between Earthly Paradise and Doom.

Your freedom of thought reminds me of the species closest to you: wolves. I heard you’re interested in the wolf population in Lithuania …

Wolves are close to me in their spirit: lonely, persecuted, but free. In Soviet times, they had become a symbol of resistance for me.

It seems that today we think more than ever about the world we live in. The epidemic and quarantine have asked us questions that we have not drawn attention to. Does a person always begin to think faster when faced with a threat?

Probably yes. Such a reaction has been present in our instincts since time immemorial. You cannot go deep if you do not face misery and suffering. Especially if those difficulties and sufferings are yours or the ones you love.

In his book, he tries to answer the question of why no one is capable and doesn’t even try to control the development of the world. What do you think would happen if such a person or system arose?

Much of this is written in my brochure. Perhaps not in a completely open text … In the current situation in the world, that hope should not be appreciated. It is an illusion, a utopia, so to speak. I have no doubt that there are people in the world who understand what we are getting closer to. Lekevičius is not a supergenic, he is just one of many who think a little more than ordinary people, who only care today.

There was a time when people opted for a democratic way of handling situations that eventually became savage and therefore uncontrollable capitalism. In a slightly more civilized way, we now live. The individual is valued above the system here. Changing this ideology or the spirit of capitalism and the policies associated with it can only be done theoretically. Virtually no, at least I don’t see how that could be done.

The engine of development, constant “progress” lies within us, we get it with breast milk, perhaps even with genes. Therefore, coercive and despotic global government is needed. The greatest obstacle to its emergence is the fragmentation of the world, nationalism, the opposition of ideologies.

Edmundas Lekevičius' perspectives

Do you think the world could have evolved in a completely different direction than it is evolving now?

It is always very difficult to answer the questions “what if …?” The answer to this question was somehow given by the Jews, in the Bible. Do you remember the cruel punishments that came out of heaven when the Jews forgot God and began to worship the golden calf? Later, the Jews temporarily obeyed God’s teaching, but they also returned to their …

On the other hand, and who should have foreseen everything beforehand and given man another, compassionate, everything, without exception, the loving nature, if not God? On the other hand, for whom is that God if men purify themselves as angels? I know, I know, you will say that besides God, there is morality, conscience, culture. But history tells us that all of this is just pathetic costumes that barely cover the cruel and bald monkey.

And then how to believe in good? After all, should I save the world?

I wrote a lot about it in a book. Kindness can save the world, but unfortunately it is a theory that has no real content.

You talk a lot about the conservation of nature and its ecosystems. There is an opinion that man is the largest parasite in nature. What should change to make that parasite suddenly worry about the world it lives in?

Dear sister, you know very well that parasites live inside or inside the host. In this case – Mother Nature. There are no parasites that can survive without a host. You already know something else: the parasite has become the host. Alone, won’t it be self-deception?

I enjoyed reading your book, lovely style, I would like to write textbooks from which my son learns in school …

When it comes to textbooks, you’re in the top ten. I am particularly concerned about this problem. I could talk about this for a long time, but I will say one thing: our children continue to be hit on the head not for what expands their self, their individual field of love, but for what may be necessary, but only to make the young man don’t think about society. with a screw

Edmundas Lekevičius' perspectives

His research areas are ecology, genetics, evolution. Everyone is probably asking more questions than they are answering today. Do you like to argue? Is the truth born in disputes?

The answer was found by the ancient Greeks: debate helps discover the truth, not disputes. However, this only applies to young people, the old man does not need the truth, he already knows it and wants nothing else. You remember how Christ answered Pilate’s question: “What is truth?” Everyone loves the truth, but they think that other people should be fair to him. Roman truth and the righteousness of Christ are very different things.

Sometimes it seems like fantasy movies are slowly becoming reality. Can you answer how much we have left?

You are probably talking about anti-utopias. I don’t look at them. And how much is left, I can say. 200 years maximum. Live as well as it is now, maybe 50. So, you can pass this news on to your children, but not only to their children and grandchildren.
