The record of the mother taking her daughter to the Klaipėda Simonas Dachas progymnasium was spread on social media. In it, the woman says that she is facing an “incomprehensible situation”.
According to her, due to the threat of the coronavirus, school flows were segregated, as well as the rooms where different groups study. But the bathrooms were also redesigned.
The same bathroom for girls and boys.
Shared toilets for girls and boys were formed in the progymnasium. According to the mother, several urinals were built in the toilet and several toilets were installed, but the doors that separated the toilets were open and the urinals were without partitions or curtains.
“For me, this is an incomprehensible solution,” describes the woman on social media.
When the portal tv3.lt contacted a woman, she says she found out about her daughter’s shared bathrooms for boys and girls.
“He came back from school on Friday and said there were shared bathrooms. I say honey, you mixed something up, you went to the boys’ bathroom. It says: no mom, I didn’t mix anything, there was definitely a sign on the door. I did not believe it, I told him to go on Monday and check again. Monday comes in and says: I really saw that there is a shared bathroom there. The child tells all kinds of stories, for me, of course, it was a shock, ”says a woman on tv3.lt.
The woman says that after contacting the class teacher, she confirmed this information about the shared bathrooms. Subsequently, the woman also contacted the school principal. The head of the institution replied that according to the current procedure, the bathrooms could be shared.
According to the woman, after a conversation with the director, hooks were placed on the bathroom door with which the door could be closed, and the urinals were also covered.
“It just came to our attention then. It seems to me that the government sometimes does not think about making decisions about the harm that this can do to children next time. Above all, young children do not understand this, but adolescents when they start the problems … I think it is very relevant for them and they are the most vulnerable link. We have to give them conditions, so there are many restrictions at school, they do everything and they don’t complain, “says the woman.
After the post went online, mothers who brought their children to the school said they were unaware of the shared bathrooms for boys and girls. Some other mothers comment that the decision to connect the bathrooms was also made in other schools.
School principal: this is how flows separate
The tv3.lt portal got in touch with the school’s director, Daiva Maroziene. She explains that the school is in compliance with the emergency requirements.
“We implement the decisions of the operations manager. Since the infrastructure of the school is such that we cannot separate the flows in any other way, we have a bathroom on the floor, so it was decided for a temporary period. We have to manage the flows and there are a thousand students in the school ”, comments D. Marozienė.
At present, according to the director of the institution, the urinals are covered, it is written that they cannot be used. The bathrooms are also equipped with locks.
D. Marozienė says the school has received no further complaints from parents or students.
“Yesterday (Wednesday – aut. last.) I did a survey of educators, I asked if anyone had a problem. In one class that complaint came and in another class that there were too many children. We have already solved it, we have asked the teachers to look at it during breaks ”, says D. Marozienė.
The mother who contacted tv3.lt claims that she submitted a proposal to the school to cooperate with the architect and separate the same bathroom into two parts, thus creating girls and boys bathrooms. The school principal says she has heard of the offer but has not yet received it directly. If an offer is received, the school will consider it.
“I received it yesterday afternoon (email – aut. last.), I wrote today that we accept all ideas. We are not determined to have to, our decision was because otherwise we could not control the flows. The Ministry of Health (SAM) gives priority to flow management and we have these temporary measures at our disposal.
We will accept the architect’s offer when it arrives. Let’s take a look, although there is no place to part there, distances must be maintained. If there is an original proposal, why not, we will consider it ”, says D. Marozienė.
Operations Manager: No need to divide bathrooms by gender
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (ŠMSM) orders the separation of group flows when the beds of more than 300 COVID-19 patients are occupied. According to the Statistics Department on Thursday, of the 1,019 existing beds for COVID-19 patients, 736 are occupied.
In addition, the wearing of masks is mandatory for everyone except preschool, preschool and elementary school students. Temperature measurement is also mandatory for children, and surface, cumulative, antigen, or self-monitoring tests are recommended.
The fact that it is not necessary to separate toilets by gender is indicated in the decision of the Chief of Operations of the State of State Emergency “On the prerequisites for the organization of primary, basic and secondary education”, which came into effect on 1 September this year.
The document establishes that “the principle of segregation of groups and classes must be observed in the organization of the educational process (maximum contact between students in different groups and classes, both during lessons, during breaks and after lessons): 1.2 .7. when necessary, restrooms will be allocated for use by pupils in a particular class (group, stream) without disaggregation by gender. ‘
According to data from the Statistics Department this Thursday, 24 active outbreaks are associated with educational institutions. 73 cases of COVID-19 have been identified, 68 of which are primary. 323 high-risk cases and 93 low-risk contacts were identified.
