“The decision has been made to transfer the illegal immigrants currently living in the Rūdininkai camp to the former Kybartai prison. Today we discussed the situation with the community. Of course, first of all, we regret that we were not able to speak earlier, although there certainly were such plans.
We have been planning, but the situation is such that we have a crisis situation, quick solutions are needed and there is not much time. But we agreed that in the future we will cooperate much more closely and directly, ”said A. Bilotaitė.
Speaking of the people who work in the Kybartai Correctional Center, the Minister assured that officials are needed in the Ministry of the Interior.
“We will provide a list of needs in the near future. Those who are currently working in a correctional institution will be able to transition to our system. We will definitely need a lot of strength to service this new unit of the mega Alien Registration Center. (… ) The jobs will be kept, ”said A. Bilotaitė.
In response to public safety concerns, the Minister assured that these people would not be able to leave the premises while their asylum applications were being processed and return procedures were carried out.
“We also promised that we will provide police and other additional forces to make the community feel safe,” said A. Bilotaitė.
When asked why these types of situations, when communities are not consulted, are repeated before making a decision, the minister explained that the current situation requires quick decisions.
“We just realized that today we were living in an emergency. This is a hybrid war against Lithuania. In this case, we need quick and decisive solutions.
In normal peace conditions, it would be easy to have a lot of conversations, a lot of discussions, but when there is a situation where quick decisions are needed, and in this case we have to make them here and now, such situations do. We emerged and we regret it, but we all understand that we are in an environment of hybrid warfare. I really hope everyone’s understanding, “said A. Bilotaitė.
Concerned about safety
Vilkaviškis District Mayor Algirdas Neiberka said he was more concerned about security issues. There is no police station in Kybartai.
“The main concern is the safety of the people themselves, making sure that they do not leave and walk freely in the area. For health problems: who will treat you, who will provide medical care. We are talking about the municipality not having the capacity to guarantee We also worry about social issues, who will supervise, who will be responsible, “said A. Neiberka.
The mayor pointed out that in such cases, the municipality must be informed first.
“It was a surprise for me when I received that information. I got it, first and foremost, from the media. It must be from the ministry, and not be afraid to speak not only with the municipality, but also to share information with the Kybartai community, ”said A. Neiberka.
Emotions came from ignorance
Romualdas Šunokas, the elder of the Kybartai Eldership, stated that most of the emotions came from ignorance.
“It just came to our knowledge then. (…) Those emotions were based on ignorance. Today, thanks to the Minister, we spread a bit to the others who participated and we will have something to say when we drive,” said R. Šunokas.
According to the old man, people were more afraid of migrants walking through the city.
“We were concerned about the difference between prison and the status, security and longevity of this institution. We have heard reassuring news that it will be a safe institution in the long term when it comes to workplaces, ”said R. Šunokas.
The plans were announced in late August.
In late August, it was announced that the Kybartai sector of the Marijampol correctional facility was planned to be closed soon, ”BNS wrote.
The mayor then declared that the Kybartai Correctional Home is one of the largest employers, employing more than 170 residents and there is an adult education center, the Marijampolė Vocational Training Center.
The Ministry of Justice and Interior this week approved an action plan for the transfer of illegal immigrants to the former Kybartai Correctional Center. According to Justice Minister Evelina Dobrovolska, this process should take from one to a month and a half.
Some 800 migrants will be transferred from the tents at the Rūdninkai landfill to the Kybartai prison, which is preparing for closure.
