The German government has offered Washington a $ 1 billion deal if the United States abandons sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 project, Die Zeit reports.

According to sources in the publication, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz assured US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in early August, first orally and then in writing, that Germany was ready to finance the construction of two terminals for the imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States.

These LNG terminals, which will cost up to a billion in total. Eur, is scheduled to be built in the ports of Brunswick and Wilhelmshafen.

According to Die Zeit, such a written offer from Berlin reached Washington on August 7.

“In response, the United States will allow the uninterrupted completion and commissioning of Nord Stream 2,” Die Zeit said according to the German Treasury.

Meanwhile, his representative declined to comment on this information.

“We are not commenting on individual media reports,” a spokesman for the German Finance Ministry Christoph Kuhn told reporters on Wednesday.

10 billion Euro-denominated project Nord Stream 2 is stuck at 94% implementation due to the extension of US sanctions. The pipeline is expected to double the volume of Russian gas delivered to Germany, Europe’s largest economy.
